I've over loved (read, over watered!) a ton of plants. I have to restrain myself all the time.

My problem is over buying. I think I may be a plant hoarder Crying

I've had to make a rule--no more new plants this year. No sooner had I done that than a black Siberian iris went on sale and.... oh boy. I bought it even though I had nowhere to put it! I ended up giving it away Sad But it was worth it because I met The Butterfly Lady! She's a real thing! And she's teaching me all about raising butterflies!

And wouldn't you know it, almost all my lilies are sending up new shoots this year! So where there once was one, now there're two! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! But it's so hard to resist.

Thumb of 2018-07-16/joannakat/c46339

I am no longer allowed into any of the local nurseries. Crying

When it's springtime I especially have to watch out on the plant hoarding.

I have tried to limit myself to what I can plant in a week. Tried. Tried. Tried... lol 😂

I can't go into any nurseries right now cause my Zinnias take all my time. And I can't look at plants at the grocery store lol.

If I look, I will reason a way that I can fit it somewhere!!!

Okay, so here's the winter crazy moment...

I just realized that my freezer has more pre-chopped and mixed scraps for my worm bin in it than food for people! D'Oh!

I have had to break myself of the habit of over buying roses since I long ago ran out of room. I do still over buy annuals for the pots in the spring. No one needs 35 pots of annuals to water around the yard, lol. I never over buy house plants because I learned many years ago that I kill everything that I try to grow inside. So I no longer even buy them. Occasionally some one gives me one but I've pretty much told every one not to bother. I do except plants from people who want to kill them but don't have the heart to do it themselves.

Love of gardening grows on you!
Plant Lover: Loves 'em all! Sempervivums
It's been close to sixteen months since anyone has posted to this thread. I stumbled upon it by chance and read nearly all the postings since it was started in 2016, I think it was.

I find myself "guilty as charged" on so many of the gardener's idionsycracies' mentioned - but "you are what you are"" - so one just have to live with it. It is somewhat comforting to know that you are not alone - many more like you.

An avid gardener since about eight years old, I find some things never change - just get worse. Such as over-buying seed knowing full-well you'll never get around to sowing it let alone have space to put it. Or trying to resist the urge of sneaking a snippet of an attractive looking plant, but afraid someone might notice.

My latest - just became a sempervivum (Hens and Chickens) addict. For years I was seemingly happy with only two varieties - both unnamed - but somehow stumbled upon all the named ones available today. My semp family, in a mere month, has multiplied from two varieties to more than 50 and I have prepared a multi-page "Wish List" to amuse myself, and abuse my wallet, this coming winter. The list gets longer and longer by the day. Naturally with my acquisition of so many plants I had to put in emergency on-line orders for pots and identification labels. Sure don't want to lose identities of my new family - not to mention future purchases and/or trades with fellow gardeners.

Luckily for me, at age 89 my days are probably numbered and I'll probably have to start taking it a little easier. My biggest worry - what's going to happen to all my plants when I'm dead and gone?? Similar to pet owners, I think of my plants as "my kids."

Any others like me out there? If so, let's hear from you.

Hi Don! Oh, yes, my plants are my children, and I talk to them all the time. Especially the outdoor ones because they disappear in the winter, and I can't wait to urge them back to our world come spring. Looks like your zone is the same. And now, I've started some seedlings. Boy, some came up after only two days! And they really get talked to!!!

Do you have children with two legs? If so, you can ask them to do something nice with your plants when the time comes. If s/he'll post on Freecycle, plant lovers will give them very good homes. If not an heir, then maybe a good friend?

The semps are beautiful, and I love how they multiply. I don't have any, but I love to admire them in nurseries.

So glad you found this thread! Welcome!
