Now all of my sunflower seedlings are gone. I even have been putting out slug and bug killer to no effect. Iam 🙁 bummed. (Why, why..., WHY???) ... from a movie I don't remember. I was all like, Oh no where did you go??? I wrote about this on another thread too. I want to go out at night and see what is in my garden eating things. There are no foot prints and I don't see 🐌 snail trails. There's a story about Cosmos and Cheerios on the other thread, ran out of time right now. Have to take my daughter to school.

Oh, Mindi, so sad. Do you have stray bunnies? We have them here (saw some hopping around last night). They do come out at night and eat what you have put out for them in the garden-bunny buffet. I can't have any border crocus because of them. My neighbor watches them chowing down when she takes her dog out around midnight.

They do tend to pay for their meal though--they leave poop piles here and there (thanks bunnies D'Oh! ).

Joannakat,

No bunnies. We have skunks, raccoons, mice, rats, and possum. I don't see any digging or foot prints.

But what happened last night, I was having a midnight snack of a
Bowl of Cheerios when a package fell out. It was a seed packet of Cosmos!! They are promoting caring for and helping bees. And then this morning I find the missing sunflowers and there were two little patches with really nothing in them. So I threw the Cosmos in the middle where the bare patches were and got some soil and threw it over the cosmos. So you win some and you lose some. That was a nice treat and such a happy coincidence!! How strange is that?? It's almost like it wasn't a coincidence. Like it was supposed to be that way. So we'll see if my haphazard handywork ends up in sprouts or not!

Just wanted the sunflowers for the kids. They would have loved those and so would the birds and animals, and us!!

Next year I will have to figure something else out. Hmmm.

Joannakat,

I will be totally checking that out!! Thank you!! I want 🌻 sunflowers.

OK if you look, super close, in the center, the very center, you will see the criminal dandelion FLOWER!!! It made a flower since yesterday. I think it's so naughty I can't repeat what it has to say to me.

It knows that I can't reach it...

Almost?????? OH NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I planted a few bulbs today too and when I first went out, there was this HUGE earthworm, it must have been 10 inches long! I've never seen anything like it! So I said, hey! What are you doing out here! Hold on, I'll get a stick and put you where you need to be. I did, and talked to it the whole time. "There you go, now borrow on down. Help my peony grow. That's right, eat and poo. That's what you do."

He must have understood because he became short and fat, and then slimed his way into the earth right next to my peony--the one I won in the NARR!

I plant 12 sunflower seedlings out today. To help support them in their youth, I put a 12" wide 24" tall vinyl 2"x3" fencing cylinder on the spot held down with two 24" rebars pounded down for support. Put in 3 cylinders of 4 sunflowers each. Given some floppiness of previous plantings, I attached them loosely to the wire cylinders with 1" wide garden clips.

And I have more clips attached to the top of the wires cylinders for when they reach that high. After that, they are on their own, but should do fine. We get some oddly strong winds here. Supported at 2' high, they do a lot better than having none.

Joannakat,

I read the sunflower thread. I like the putting a cup around them idea.

I used to have fish so I have two Grow led lights that I needed for the salt water fish, and a tall aquarium. The lights, I went blank on them T something full spectrum lights.

Would an aquarium work to start seeds or is the lack of air circulation bad. Maybe the heat?? Just wondering.

Thank you Joannakat!! I'll check that out!!

Well today's murmurings were to the slugs and to the weeds I had piled up on my lawn.

I told each slug, why don't you eat the poison slug killer. Why are you still alive. Why are you on the marigolds. Aren't they noxious?

I can't kill things with my hands so I picked up each one and threw it far as I could from the garden saying, your gone (fling), ok your gone (fling).

Then there were the piles of weeds that I had already pulled out. With every handful I told them goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, off to the city compost heap. Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

It was a talkative morning. Even to the dead weeds lol. Looks better. Weeds are the bane of my existence. The crabgrass. What is it good for, absolutely nothing, say it again.

Maybe crabgrass is useful to keep land from sliding away cause it surely hangs on to it.

Hope y'all have a great gardening day. It's not supposed to be over 70 today so I won't have to water so much.

Iam going to Orchards!! And looking at plants! Uh oh. I want some bird feeders so the birds leave my garden alone and I can enjoy them eating what I would like them to eat!

Cheers!!

Oh, ick!

I give them beer. They love beer. Seriously!

Try putting a bowl of beer that isn't awfully tall down in your garden area where they are troublesome in the evening. Then, in the morning, you'll find it full of slugs! Some will be dead, but some won't. Then you can decide if you want to dump it out in a sunny place where they'll just dry up, or flush them down the toilet or something else that gives you pleasure. You can even pick them out an fling them far away if you like (eewwwww!!!!!)

I picked up a 40 oz Pabst Blue Ribbon bottle for this purpose last year for under $2 and didn't even need to finish it off. After two bowls, the slugs were totally gone. If they come back later this season, they'll get beer again!

Yes, beer! The drink that makes your slugs disappear! And if it doesn't work for your slugs, you can drink it and then you won't care anymore....at least, until it wears off Hilarious!
