'Goldbug' and 'Bros' rock the house. 'Xanthoheuff' has some potential it looks like.

OK... here's 'Beacon Hill', 'Bronze Ingot' (baby) and 'Bros'.

I'm still trying to figure out my Heuffelii bed. I don't want to gravel mulch it like my other semp areas. This is a separate and distinct area bordered by sedums and other non-graveled plantings. A gravel mulch here would be unsightly. So I'm thinking what other kind of mulch will be more natural looking and blend with the soil and the other bordering plants. One thought was Fir cones. I've got an endless supply of them and they take years to decompose. But I'm not sure how they'd work. I think it would work pretty good if the Heuffs were large and established. Maybe I could run them through a chipper... if I could find one. I suppose I could buy a bale of shredded bark in a suitably large particle size. I think maybe anything shredded will hold onto too much moisture.

Any opinions? Is organic a bad idea here?

If an organic mulch isn't suitable maybe I can find some gravel that is very close in color to my soil. Time for another trip to the rock store perhaps.

Tim you might want to find a gravel that will work color wise. The organic matter might stunt or rot the heuffs. Remember they are from rocky areas.

Tim,

DEFINITELY NO on the spruce comes! Too big, have compounds that prevent the growth of some plants, and retain too much moisture.

I would suggest a different color/ texture of gravel for that area if you want to distinguish it from your stream bed. Go to your nursery and see what they have to offer.

OK... bad idea. So I went to the local rock emporium and they had various gravels none of which seem too useful. I bought a bag of pea gravel that looked worth a try. It is pictured below... it dries to a considerably lighter color. But it seems unavoidable that if I cover an area with gravel, it will take on the appearance of an area covered with gravel. Shocking... I know. Perhaps using a different gravel like this will at least give me the visual distinction I want.

Yes, I think the difference in size, shape and color will help feature different areas. I think it will look great Tim.
Also there is going to be the contrasting colors of the heuffelii.

There appears to be alot of demand for Heuffelii of late. Looks like both Simply Succulents and MCG are out of Heuffelii stock until next Fall. SMG has been adding a few selections day by day this last week. They have 'Gold Bug' right now... maybe I'll go grab a dozen to light up my semp patch. Hilarious! If you are looking for some online selections for the upcoming season I would suggest checking them out before they run out of stock too. They generally send out plants that can be divided into at least three nice starts. Small selection but big plants.

Thanks Tim, personally I have really begun to enjoy these plants because again they seem to hold up better in my weather! My ideal semp is the water lily shape which I think is difficult to find in heufs, but I'll keep looking Smiling Sticking tongue out

That is a beauty Greg. 'Hyacinth' goes through some really lovely color changes.

I got a 'Lemon Sky' two days ago from Mountain Crest, I look forward to watching it grow. A lovely and healthy plant.

Me too. I was wondering if they might be sending out immature stock but all six plants were quite satisfactory.

Greg, I can't remember what happened to my original 'Boromir'. Shrug!

Those babies rock, Lynn. I love the yellow heufs.
I'm definitely bulking up my heuf collection... here's a 'Hot Lips' from SMG that has already made a remarkable color change, despite the constant splattering of mud from heavy downpours. I hope they don't drown out there.

What bright looking semps, Lynn! I broke down last year (after finding out that the EU semps were going to be delayed) and made my first purchase from MCG of 4 heufs. I purchased
