They are beautiful Bev.
'Purple Haze' goes through some beautiful color changes. You will love it.

I spent some time out in the sunshine today moving heuffelii into a single bed. The bed will be entirely heuffelii. So are there are about 25 in the beds. Hmmm, about 40 more to go. Wonder if they are all going to fit? 'Clown' takes up a huge area, it has the largest leaves and rosette size of all the heuffs I have. It even beats a mature 'Apache' colony.
It will be fun to have them all together so I can judge them against each other through the seasons for color and form.

Wow Lynn sounds really great! If Clown beats your Apache that is amazing! I remember seeing that giant heuffellii in your garden and then returning home to mine and wondering why even after several years it isn't the same giant! Sticking tongue out So Clown sounds amazing! Hurray!

I saw this picture from Lynn and it blew my mind.

I would love to have some potted Heuffs grow like that. How does this happen? It seems like a rarity. Is this natural? Is it cultivar specific? Can they be groomed and encouraged to do this? Or is this just a random stroke of luck?
I'm also wondering how long it can go on like this. Seems like it would have to fall apart at some time.

Just got all the heuff seedlings that were selected into a new bed along with about half of the other semps. All the ones that the clinic students selected are now being grown on for at least a second look.

There are also two heuffs that I think will get name. Both reds, but quite different from each other or other red heuffs. Now to think of names.

I am thinking of dividing Heuffs next week. It's supposed to be sunny. Is any one interested in trades?
If so should we get the divisions rooted and growing again before we trade
or ????
Open to suggestions and I can post a list of what I am going to divide if anyone is interested
I tip my hat to you.
Jo Ann.

I would love to see your list Jo Ann. It works well to just divide and send. I have received them that way many times with no trouble getting them rooted. Especially this early in the season when they are actively growing.

Thanks for that info Lynn'
I really only started growing heuffs a few years ago. I have been very meticulous about dividing them. I think I have been way too cautious. I watched someone dividing Gold Bug about a month ago and he was just pulling them apart. They seemed to be already partially divided. I think some varieties come apart better than others. Makes sense you could ship them right away, as when they are cut they need to dry before planting any way.
I had a very small sale today. a preview for the Chehalis market. I found myself trying to sell succulents IN A BAR ! Yes bar lighting......it does NOT work. Thumbs down
I sold 1 Gold bug (the only plant you could see in there) to a 10 year old. Hurray! Lots of people said they would buy at the market. I could hear them thinking "when I can see what I am buying" Whistling Hilarious! Win some ...Loose some.
I will get out there tomorrow and make a list of Heuffs but I bet you probably have the ones I am going to divide. Tim I'm pretty sure you have these.
wait I have it..
Green Stone,
Mystique,
Torrid zone,
Fandango,
Woton,
Inferno,
Hot lips
and Bronze Ingot and Gold Bug.
I'm hoping my Jade, Angel Wings and the new one i got from Cynda will grow fast nodding ....so far ...Not so much Hilarious!

Yes, I do have all on your list Jo Ann.

I have found that depending on the time of year, size of colony, and growing conditions, some heuffs will easily pull apart. The same heuffelii under different circumstances can only be divided by cutting with a sharp knife. Hope this makes sense?

Yes this does make sense. Have you found that early spring is when they come apart easily? I am thinking that some varieties come apart easily and some take more work. What do you think about dividing now? It has been later in the season when I have done this before and I do not remember that any came apart very easily. The Gold Bugs I saw in the early spring were like separate little plants. They were stressed too. Think I will bare root a Gold Bug tomorrow and see what it looks like. I can always repot it into a bigger pot. Greenstone I have found to be all "joined at the hip". I would be happy to find out that at some time of year it is not that way. Greenstone is a good name for it when it comes to dividing Whistling

I find that many of them separate easily after the stress of our very wet winters.
Trixi also posted on face book that spring is not the best time to divide and sell heuffs, because some of them in the colony will bloom. She also explains how to identify some of them that will bloom. Very informative.
Dividing to late in the year can be difficult because they are starting to slow down and go into winter dormancy.
I like the idea of dividing in the spring, so they have plenty of growing time before the next winter hits. I do agree with Trixi that you may not want to sell or trade them until later in the summer. By then you will know for certain which ones will bloom.

Here are some of theheuffs I divided today. What I think I am seeing is that the bigger and older the clump is the more separation thre is between the offsets. Gold Bug was the easiest but a large Green Stone was much easier than the smaller ones. Less cutting on the older ones.

I posted the pics from my phone as it is too hard to get them off the phone and into the computer. I didn't see your post Lynn about Trixie. I will check it out. It would work for me to divide them in March, so I will try to remember that until Whistling next March nodding I let the divisions dry today in the shade and planted them in dry potting mix this evening. I will water them in the morning.
When you decide to divide your Clown I would love to buy a "chunk"
Some of the Green Stone divisions fill a 3 5/8 pot already.
