I bought a variety package of heirloom tomatoes as I'm not sure yet what I like. My question is since I don't know what kind of tomato each plant is, or what color it's supposed to be, oor size, how do I know when its ripe?

The package didn't have any names on it at all?? The best I can suggest isthat most of them are probably red. When they get to that color feel them to see if they are firm and pick one and see how it tastes.

I suggest framing the variety package and hanging it on the wall. If you grow them you still won't know what it was you liked or disliked. If you like cherry tomatoes either Black Cherry or Jaun Flamee are good and productive with good taste.

If you want a container tomato to grow in a 2-3 gallon pot I'd suggest Sophie's Choice. You can make sandwiches out of it, use it in salads or sliced as a side dish. It's been as early as 43 days for me. Claud

Myself, I am primarily planting Cherry types.
I have found here in Texas, that many heirloom Tomatos are wastes of space. I stick (mostly) to hybrids for my main crops. I enjoy and sell, the Cherry forms. They keep up with the heat and the colors and shapes amuse me. I sell mixed pints at the farmers market and customers get a kick out of them. I do not bother selling regular tomatos.
Some are not heirloom in the most strict sense but are simply O.P.
This is the first year I am adding the "blue" shades to the mix. I have my doubts but, well, why not? The germination has been awful on these blues for the most part but I suspect this is due to the seed seller being lazy about growing out fresh seed. I hear mixed (mostly bad) reviews of "blue" tomatos. We will see!

Anyway, as I recall, this is what I have been transplanting this past week- these are all Cherry. "New" as you probably would deduce, means I have never grown them and purchased seed.

Tess's Land race Currant
Chocolate Cherry
Pink Bumblebee

Fahrenheit Blues (New)

Matt's Wild Cherry
Sugar Plum
Blush
Jelly Bean (New- might be a hybrid, can not remember)
Primary Colors (New)
Green Pear
Yellow Pear (yuck)
Some others that have slipped my mind!
You know what makes me mad? I can not find good 'ol RED Pear seeds anywhere in my collection. Darn, I like that little plain-Jane! I forgot to buy some while I still had time. Oh well...next year.

I do grow the hybrid "Sweet Million"- I like it!

Oh, I am growing Orange and Red Angora because I simply like the fuzzy plants! I grow a few other heirlooms- mostly for the heck of it. Some years I get something out of them, others, not so much.
If any of you know of another odd-ball Cherry type I ought to try, let me know!

Tim - have you ever heard of "Aunt Molly's" ground cherry tomato??

A friend of mine from Michigan sent me a box that he grew and they are very unusual in that they actually have a husk on them that covers the top of the tomato. Another unusual thing about them is that you don't have to pick them off the3 vine. When they ae rip they simply fall off the plant.

I bought a package of seeds from Uprising seeds, www.uprisingorganics.com

My friend tells me they are hard to germinate. I started four seeds and so far two have germinated.

The package itself say they are slow germinators and it bears until heavy frost. They will stay on the counter for weeks after you bring them inside.

Anyone getting tomato blossums yet? I have one on a beefsteak tomato I bought. The blossum looks just as strange as the tomato does. Sort of wrinkly, like it can't smooth out properly.
