They all look so nice and wish my Tiarella spread like that. Mine are just starting to look better after a tough Winter.

crawgarden said: Rose, does your Tiarella spread on its own, or do you break it up?

It spreads on it's own. It's called Appalachian Trails. It took a while for it to take off, but it was definitely worth the wait!

And it hasn't spread at all? I have this in two different beds. It's done well in both. I even gave several starts to my neighbor. Maybe my sandy soil allows it to spread easier? Or, lack of mulch?

Nope! No mulch, maybe a lack of significant sunlight.

The ground cover in the one bed gets no sun at all. Is yours the trailing kind or the clump? I have both in my gardens.

It must be the clump kind, did not know there was a trailing one!

It looks like Terra Nova has discontinued their trailing Tiarella.

I guess they didn't catch on. I got these from the coop I was in years ago. I didn't even know what they were, but they looked pretty cool in the pictures!

Here is what happened with mine heucheras. I bought six heucheras just before the winter started. I was hoping they could overwinter in the porch, but they all died. The one that survived had been bought a little bit earlier last year. Since I brought lots of oak leaves to my garden last fall, my old heuchera (Palace Purple) loved it and got much bigger leaves this spring. Encouraged by the success of oak leaves, I bought a bunch of heucheras to plant this year; Palace Purple, Obsidian, Timeless Night, Black Olive, and Carnival and some green ones. They are all planted by now and they look happy. They will have enough time to harden before the winter. Hopefully, my heucheras will really take off next year Crossing Fingers!

Jasmin…Left One trailing and 3 clumpers in pic had these for years. Keep deviding for more . I bring mine in to over winter on porches next to the house out of storms , ice , snow. Keep them in low growing pots 18x8". Just amazing plants.. deer and gophers resistant … that's a plus around here.

Beautiful photos .... Smiling

I was wondering what you consider "long-lived."

Not many have been but I do have a few that are over 10 years old . Sadly the brightest colored ones do not seem to last long. The reds are the shortest lived for me and way to many do not overwinter. Have to admit I do not keep up with dividing them like I should. And Winters can be pretty harsh here . if no snow cover there can be high winds between the lakes.

Thanks, Bob.

I still have the heuchs I purchased in 2011. It is a total mystery to me why they are still alive. No they are not thriving. I just haven't had time to take care of them properly ...
