Would Sundown go in the synonym field?
Common name: Coneflower
Genus: Echinacea
Cultivar name: Evan Saul

Which brings up another question. When doing a search on Echinacea 'Evan Saul' I get this. Coneflower (Echinacea Big Sky™ Sundown)
The photo doesn't look correct.

What do you think Dave ? Should the common name be Coneflower Sundown. Or should Sundown be the synonym? And do synonyms show up on the first page when looking up plant? I would think most people would be looking for the name Sundown . It is usually sold by that name.

Lynn the picture was already there when I started working on the Echinacea. I think it is a Sundown , I remember reading that the Big Sky series had problems with petal development, If you feel it is something different please let me know. Also if you get a chance look at 2 pictures under Ozark Coneflower( Echinacea Paradoxa) they look white and do not look like any Paradoxa I have seen. What do you think?

I was wondering if that was the case with the photos. Even some of the semps will do odd things within a cultivar. S. 'Fame Montrose' is one of them. Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Fame Monstrose')

Everything I see about says it is a yellow bloom. I do wonder, knowing where Tee lives, if it is not bleached out by the sun and/or camera setting for exposure. It looks like it is yellow but over expose in the photo. Maybe you could treemail Tee and ask her about the conditions of lighting and if that bloom is normally a brighter yellow?
What do you think?

I doubt the photos you are referring to are Echinacea paradoxa Bob, it looks more like Sunrise.

The first photo looks correct.

I think Janet is correct. I had Sunrise and I was a very pale yellow, almost white. It also wasn't a very hearty plant for me. It struggled for a few years and just didn't bother coming back after that. My other two (White Swan and Magnus) have done fine and are still with me.

Lynn I have had trouble with just about all of the Big Sky series. The Sunrise I had did the same thing. Looked yellow for about one day and faded to white right away. There is a new seed variety called Cheyenne Spirit that you might want to check out from the people that introduced Pow Wow Wildberry. They come in just about all the Ecninacea colors and are supposed to be available this spring. There are some advance pictures on the Garden web they look great.

It won't be a bleached E. paradoxa Bob, Echinacea paradoxa is a species, thus commands a lower case in the species epithet. Species don't vary a great deal, nor have strange shaped petals happening as you might find in a hybrid.

E. paradoxa has a very specific shape with narrow drooping petals and a large prominent cone, yellow is an unusual colour for Echinacea and isn't found in another straight Echinacea species that I know of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E...

Hybrids with drooping petals and/or yellow colouring are likely to be a cross between E. paradoxa and E. purpurea, as is the case with Echinacea 'Adam Saul'. Echinacea pallida is another with narrow drooping petals but is a bright pink.

Thanks for the information.

On a different subject why are a few plants sold under different names in the USA & the UK . For example Heuchera Blackcurrent in the USA and Heuchera Blackberry Jam in the UK.

Apart from foreign languages where a translation of a name is often better given a slightly different name, I think the usual reason for different naming in different countries is to do with trade names and copyrights which would perhaps apply to one country but not necessarily the other. Using a different name might overcome difficulties for the breeder.

Neither. The common name is Coneflower.

Synonyms are reserved for alternate latin names only.

Sundown should go in "Additional cultivar fields" until we have a "trade name" designation, that will come sometime in the future.
