I have added the "Trade name" to the database.

Starting now, when you add or edit a plant, you will see the place for "Trade name". This field should ONLY be used if the cultivar field is also filled in, and the trade name should only contain the non-cultivar name that is used in commerce.

A good example is the Sundown coneflower that NJBob referenced above. You can see it in action on this plant:

Coneflower (Echinacea Big Sky™ Sundown)

If you have any questions on how to use this, please just let me know!

That is the convention used by RHS.

We can display them any way we like. What would you suggest?

Translations.
RHS article notes "....For the sake of stability, the correct form of a cultivar name is taken, with certain provisos, as that in which it was originally published, in a nursery catalogue or elsewhere. Translations are therefore classified as trade designations..."

OK?

Just looks odd, I had never seen it that way. I was thinking more along the lines of aka but if this is conventional then I'll get used to it. Rolling my eyes.

Thanks for the link Evan.
So now I see where it says "In the Plant Directory section of this book, trade designations are linked to cultivar names by an equals sign (Sundance = ‘Lich’) for clarity.".

So are we displaying this correctly? I'm perfectly willing to display this in whatever fashion we deem right and appropriate.

Just bringing this to everyone's attention. From the same RHS page:

"...An additional selling name is therefore given (or perhaps several, covering different countries in which the plant is sold) and this is the trade designation...."

When you add translations being considered Trade Names there could end up being several Trades Names per cultivar.

The moderators selecting the preferred Trade Name resolves this.

I am still having trouble understanding how to enter plants with Series/Trademark.
Sedum (Hylotelephium telephium subsp. telephium Touchdown™ Breeze)

And how do you get the TM to show with Touchdown?

Just copy and paste the ™ symbol from some page that already has it. That's how I do it. Smiling I edited Sedum (Hylotelephium telephium subsp. telephium Touchdown™ Breeze) to add it for you.

Should it show in the name? In the alphabetical listing? Sedum 'Touchdown™ Breeze'.

Well, is the cultivar name "Touchdown Breeze" or "Touchdown™ Breeze"? If the latter, then edit the name and add the symbol and it'll appear in the listing with it.

I see from the nursery that it is Sedum - Touchdown™ Series

How do you interpret their information?

Just as it now shows in our entry, the Touchdown™ Series is in the series designation and the Touchdown Breeze is the cultivar name for that particular plant in that series. It doesn't show as Touchdown™ Breeze on the Terra Nova site.

The trademark should be showing up in the alphabetical listing of the plants. If a series has a trademark symbol, the rest of the name is the trade name, so these should be corrected. In the case of Touchdown Breeze, for example, you should enter Touchdown™ as the trade series, Breeze as the trade name, and Touchdown Breeze as the cultivar name until the real cultivar name can be found. The actual cultivar name will be a somewhat meaningless series of letters or numbers or both, and it's usually found in lists of plant patents.
