Tiffany- Wow thanks for the acorns!!!
Gene and Sue- Oh this is interesting. One of the reasons I wanted to try growing from seed- my sister did some cuttings of the S. cylindrica, and they sat in the pot for at least a year before making sprouts, and now maybe a year later they are still very very tiny, so I thought seeds might be faster (plus I like a challenge and am trying to learn about all this Botany). Probably they are slow either way.

Cutting are almost always faster than seeds. Cuttings will give you true to form plants. With seeds you never know what you are going to get which is kinda fun perhaps. Gene

Mary, Most Sans produce juvenile form from seeds and stem cuttings. They will stay juvenile form until you get rhyzones from the plant and it will produce it's normal form. It is said that Hahnii (birdnest) is a juvenile form of trifasciata that stayed in it's juvenile state.

This threat should have a "enabler" warning. trying so hard not to buy anything for a month, didn't last over a week. Found a nice 4 snake plant collection on ebay. Sure glad they survive in low light, no space left near a window.

Hey, lets not hear any "I don't have any windows left" excuses. Sans. thrive under lights. Gene

Sans do survive indoors with out much light but they so so much better with window light. When I bring my sans out from the basement in late spring, they look a little beat up. How much better looking they are now. And soon I will have to bring them in for another winter season. I have a big stand with many T5 bulbs lite 15 hrs. daily.

Gene,
I like that new Sans Futura Striated. Was it very expensive? Is it possible for me to get a starter from you? Trade?
I would give you any extras I have anyway if you need something in my collection.

Applies to almost all Sans. : if you propagate from a leaf or leaf cuttings, you will not get color and/or variegation just plain green. Gene

Those look great, maybe someday I'll have a sans that is half as nice. Gene, I took your advise and bought some T5HO 6500k lights, lot of light for such a small bulb, and very little heat.

Good news! Keep the plants as close to the lights as you can. I ran 21 fixtures of those lights last winter and the electric bill was very reasonable. Gene

Gene, do these T5HO bulbs put out enough light to burn shade lovers? I have a suncalk, measure light over a 12hr period and at 6" from the bulb rate it as part sun. I have some blocks of 2x4 and 4x4 to raise plants. I'm 4 to 6 inches from the bulbs.

It appears that many of my young Hoya cuttings like this increase in light, it could be just the fact they finally have a good root system established.

I have 4 more T5's for my outdoor succulents, under the eaves to keep dry and a clear cover, I hope it adds enough heat to keep from freezing. Last winter was mild, lowest temps around 25f but I need to be ready for 15f or lower. I can get a cold Columbia Gorge wind sometimes.
