Hey all...I'm on a short vacation visiting my daughter in non-sunny southern California! yay! Today we're going rose shopping! I'm going to plant roses in my daughter's yard and if I find some that I can't get at home, I'll pack them in my suitcase and fly them home with me. I'll just put my clothes in box and mail them home, no biggy! haha. I've been to San Diego twice, and both times it was rainy. I would love to just once see Balboa Park when the sun is shining. Any suggestions for nurseries around here? We're going to Kniffing's today...they have roses 20% off.
I'll check back later--my daughter would be willing to drive a few hours if you know of a great place.

Only two Calif. rose gals on here that I know of, and we are both north of San Francisco so can't help with any nursery suggestions. Shrug!

Betty is in Bakersfield, in the valley just north of LA. San Diego is about 120 miles south of L.A. San Diego is about 1/2 hr to the border.

Yeah, I live in good ole' Bakersfield, about 250 miles north of San Diego. We do spend four weeks a year in Oceanside, 35 mi. north of San Diego, but in recent years we've pretty much stayed in the North County area and hung out by the beach. We did go through our nursery binge for about four or five years but stopped about a year ago when our gardens couldn't handle any more plants. There's a really nice nursery in Poway that we really like but they are not rose specialists, and two or three of the nurseries we used to check all the time are no longer there -- bummer. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

Toni, you're thinking of Stephgem. She was fairly active in Cubits, but she rarely checks in here.

A little Northland Rosarium catalog arrived in today's mail. Hardly more than a list of their offerings, but many lovely photos on the inside front and back covers. There are quite a few new items on this year's list.

Toni: Just saw this thread and unfortunately I'm about 100 miles north of where you are...maybe even more.
It's still too early to get bare root roses in So. Cal. They usually show up right after Xmas.
Can't help you with nurseries down there as I rarely go that far south...sorry Sad

edited to add, send wcgypsy a TreeMail. She lives down that way and would know the good nurseries.

I hit the jackpot on rose nurseries! Knifflers in el cajon, not far from san diego. I got ketchup and mustard and koko loco for 16.95 ea! Bare root, huge canes and roots, fresh new delivery from weeks I think! Bought 6 in all, mostly new. Great lady there who packed them so I could carry them onto the plane. My flights have all been delayed or canceled so I'm rerouted through houston for the night. Be home tomorrow hopefully so ill give you all the scoop on the nursery. Its worth driving 250 miles imho! Sure glad I got my daughter to drive the 20 miles from her house. Hurray!

Mike - Uh, I'm probably about 1800 miles away from you, not 100. LOLLLLLLLL. Never been to California, stuck in SnowTownUSA (well, not really, but my snow STILL hasn't melted!!). I just knew that there was someone near San Diego (to me, anything within 200 miles is definitely near by having grown up in the SW.. heck, Denver's only about.. uh.. 70? miles from East to West across & ..hmm.... uh.. lessee, it starts at about exit 190 & ends at .. what.. exit 230? So around 40 miles north/south? It's easy for me to go over 200 miles in a weekend & never leave the southeast suburbs of Denver. Nothing like LA/SanFran, but still. That, plus I love driving, so putting 250 miles wouldn't be that big of a deal for me. Heck, I sometimes go over 100 miles just for a burger! (one really awesome burger joint in down in Colorado Springs, and it's about 51 miles 1 way).

Got the dogs their Christmas shot with Santa this year. The photographer had a 3 second delay on her camera, but I had brought my own camera & managed to get this shot. :)
