Aldi, the most beligerant to stay as far out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as possible.

All things being equal I would rather crawl across a parking lot full of broken glass, than trade at Aldi's

I may have to pick up one of the canners, I do want to make applebutter, applesauce, and low sugar peach jam. I know I better get moving on the peach jam before the season is over. Have a salsa recipe I want to make too.

IMO all Aldis may not measure up to ADA standards because they occupy older stores built before the act passed. Sad I'm sure they rent these at a much better cost than a modern building. I'm pretty sure both Aldis in our area are in compliance, but they were both grocery's that up-sized to a larger building. Smiling

Maybe a little. .. But Aldi is now the #3 grocer in the country (behind Malwart & Kroger) and has just started spending more than $3B in expansion here to add 900 new stores. Lidl has the tools but they had delays in starting expansion here in the US. BTW, Aldi also owns Trader Joes. We love Trader Joes! No salt added fire roasted salsa and no salt added marinara are two big draws.
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.

I made an Aldi stop on my way home from Pittsburgh... grabbed some easy lunch add-ins for Joyanna and stocked up on some cereals and other favorites. Beautiful seedless red grapes were 2 pound for $2.50 (I think). 99 cent mangoes -- I've gotten my MIL hooked on them. Strawberries were still very sweet and flavorful. Even snagged two $3 seedless watermelons! I also got a gyro sandwich kit but haven't tried it yet, and I put a couple containers of their potato salad into the fridge. I really like their potato and macaroni salads, but they are "seasonal" and about to disappear until Memorial Day.

I had no idea that you guys had Aldi and Lidl over there. Aldi is actually two separate companies - Aldi (sud) operate in the US and the UK whilst Aldi (nord) are the owners of Trader Joes over there (they have no UK presence). They have divvied up Europe between themselves more or less along the lines of their names.

I prefer to use Aldi or Lidl where I can for two reasons - they pay staff the voluntary living wage as opposed to the minimum wage and they also give our farmers better business and payment term without nasty get out clauses or penalties.

They are what they are - cheap honest produce sold at the lowest cost possible with few frills. Weekly specials and a range of products that are themed and only for short periods (ie; Greek, Italian, Spanish weeks etc.).

Over here they tend to be great sources of unusual plants and great prices. Whilst it goes against my beliefs to buy plants from supermarkets I do indulge from time to time as what they sell is about a third or more of the prices of specialist nurseries.
The garden hardware is also extremely good value and more importantly better quality than the garden centres/hardware stores.
Salvia and anything unusual

That will give me good reasons to shop there as well. There is an Aldi only about 5 miles from my house and I have never shopped there *Blush* . I will go there this weekend. Thank you for sharing that information.

I just started shopping at ALDI's in Gaithersburg this Spring. Ever since, my COSTCO bill has been on the decline. That is saying a lot because I shop COSTCO religiously every week.

BTW, those green grapes in the circular this week were huge and deliciously sweet and at a price no one can beat! Hurray! Hurray!

ditto, the grapes this week were super! and 98 cents a pound I think?
the strawberries were 1.38? but starting to go, so I cut them up and sugared them as soon as I got them.
My store usually has a Hiring poster up, I think.. $12 an hour? Staff are all very efficient, nice, and busy.

My Aldi does not stock plants very often, it's a small store. But it is the first (only) place I saw a lucky bean plant among some 3 inch houseplants like dracaena... The clearance Phalaenopsis at $5 are a good post holiday deal.
Plant it and they will come.

The strawberries at our Aldi were $1.39. Didn't go for them, but got 'em anyway, long with mushrooms at 89¢ and bagged spinach at $1.19. Dinner Sunday was spaghetti w/ home made bolognese and a spinach salad with strawberries, toasted pecans, proscuitto and grape tomatoes.

I went to the Quince Orchard store on Sunday afternoon. BIG MISTAKE! There were kids running all over the place, people leaving their carts in the middle of the aisle while they looked at something 20 feet away. The produce shelves were getting bare, and the staff was trying hard to keep them stocked.
