Ginger,
Your first one is Syngonium podophyllum. There are at least a dozen varieties out in the market place. Almost all nurseries make up some sort of name themselves. Could be 'White Butterfly'. The more light it gets the deeper the variations gets. The second is devil's Ivy (nick name). Don't have the proper name. These are old favorites. I have several types of each myself.

Hello stush and jenjen,

My name is Jelinda AKA : jo or jojoe.I am new to the site and not much newer with house plants Whistling .I was browsing through the forums when I found this one.I have a question and maybe even some plants misidentified for me Confused

I have the same plants and a pothos that are in your pic's jen.I am hoping if I post pic's of my plants & the names that were given to me for them,as well as the web site that I was told to go to and see how to take care of them.(which didn't tell me much) I could get my plant's identified correctly.
On the web site on top of the pic's the name of each plant is in a different color, click it and it gives care instructions
Stush,I will appreciate any help!!! I am still learning.

Thank you, have a nice day & Merry Christmas
#1 I was told was a white butterfly "'syngonium podophyllum' i think that one was the same

Hi Jo...my 2nd plant is a heart leaved philodendron...I only thought it was a pothos. The ID forum here is a GREAT place to go for IDs...very knowledgable (SP?) folks there. Welcome to All Things Plants...I'm sure you will love it here. Happy holidays to you as well Angel

Hi Jojoe, welcome to wild and wooly ATP!!

Thanks so much for using the latin names above. I know many people hate it when I use them, but this is a perfect case in point. I didn't realise the pothos and the philodendron were two different species. And I wouldn't have unless you used the latin. Thank you! Hurray!

Thank you Sheryl,

I haven't been collecting plants long, but I absolutely love them and love caring for them!!! I have MS and it causes a lot of memory loss,so I have notebooks with information on my plants to help my remember which likes what.I found out that when trying to id a plant it's almost impossible without the botanical/latin names.I have found I am attracted to a lot of different plants, I mean plants that look odd or unusual.I like Rhipsalis plants and they are almost impossible to id.Having the latin names helps find good, correct info on caring for them as well.

As for my pothos and philodendron they are in the same family 'Araceae'.That's where it stops they are a different genus.

It is nice meeting you, hope to see you around, trust me I have lots of questions. If i can't find it on-line or I don't understand it I ask Sticking tongue out

See, I learn something new here. I thought that pothos was just a nick name for philodendron. Like I used Sans for Sansevieria. I know there are dozens of heart shaped vines out there. I use a nursery like Hirts Greenhouses for ID. They have nice pictures to help. After I know a name then I turn to Daves Garden site to further explore it. My memory is fast failing me also. I use pictures of plants I buy and label them using the Paint program on Windows. After words I install them into a excel spread sheet and type in all the information I can remember. After about a year or so, I retake pictures and see how much they changed. I have a large list on Photo bucket which I kept free to the public to see or use as they want. Photobucket doesn't work on this site but you don't need it. I can easily download any picture off my computer's windows program to this site.

Good morning,

Sheryl there are a lot of different Syngoniums cultivar's.I have 2 and I'm not sure about their exact cultivar if you look on davesgarden.com plant files they are all syngonium podophyllum. What it took me a while to realize was that the climbers or vines take sun to partial shade. The other cultivars that are in the tropicals & tender perennials category take light shade.I have one of the pink ones not sure which one it is, i'm leaning towards 'Mango Allusion' it's in the tropical & tender perennials group.I have one in the vines & climbers category.I can't decide if it's a imperial white or a white butterfly?? The pink ones get pinker the more sun they get and they recommend light shade for them.

Stush, you have some beautiful hanging plants!! Is your 3rd picture a type of philodendron? It's so pretty I love the variegated leaves. Is the 4th picture a pothos?Last question *Blush* what kind of plant is that last picture of.I couldn't tell,it kind of looked like a pink philodendron but i've never seen or heard of such a plant, but anything is possible I tip my hat to you.

Jo,
Took me awhile to find all the info. Here goes;
Picture #1 Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly'
Picture #2 Syngonium podophyllum NOID (no identification). This develops nicely rosy leaf colors when in bright light (not direct sun). It can take morning sun.
Picture #3 Scindapsis pictus argyraeus. Purchased at Hirt's Gardens. Said to be rare but latter saw at local store.
Picture #4 nick name in the Devil's Ivies Tribe. (Like who's not) 'Double Dip. Proper name 'Epipremnum aureum 'Njoy'.
Picture #5 Syngonium podophyllum 'Orientals Shanghal'. What I like about this one is the leaves has 3 lobs. Some still have the traditional caladium look. The leaves that turned all pink, didn't last long when brought indoors. In fact I tend to loose about 1/2 of my leaves when bringing in from out doors.
Also Hirt's Gardens is still having a discounted sale going on. I like the pictures and ID's on each plant. I use it as a ID checker. I know buying a plant for $3 seems like nothing but like me after the total is added up, I owe $50 or more. This time of year and also the bad economy, that can seem excessive for our hobby.
Please excuse some of my poor spelling/typing mistakes,
Stush
PS, If you want a piece, let me know. I can mail out something in spring. If you like starting from a small stem.

Good morning,

Stush, I would love a cutting off of it.Have you trying going to davesgarden.com and typing 'syngonium podophyllum' into the search plant files bar.It pulls up every species of plant in that genus and you can just click on one of them, when it opens where it list family, genus, species etc... click on family name. That brings up every type of olant within that family. That's how I id plants that i'm having a hard time finding, sometimes i'll have better luck nailing down the cultivar and common names even.

You have identified your plant as a white butterfly maybe you can help me *Blush* .I can't decide if mine is a white butterfly or a imperial white Sticking tongue out .Do.you mind looking at mine and i'll give you a link to them and i would appreciate your opinion. It the 2 plants on my last post above yours, the last one and i'm not positive about the 1st one,i think it's a mango allusion Shrug!

On these links will you look and see which one looks the most like mine???

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING AND THE OFFER!!!!!
for the record i would also love a cutting of that 3rd one *Blush* Whistling If you see any pictures of anything you would like a cutting of this spring just send me a message (what are they called here? t-mail).

I bought 2 new plants last night as soon as i get a picture of them i will post, they are both exotic angel nursery plants and of course they are labeled all screwed up Thumbs down

SHERYL OH GOODNESS,i almost forgot to answer your question Smiling Sorry
Yes the rhipsalis does bloom it gets it flowers all down the stems and they are so pretty!!
have a nice day everyone!!!

Thanks, I might need to invest in one of those.... hmmm...

Be careful about the info you get on Dave's garden in the plant files... Unfortunately, things were pretty much posted wholesale on there without a whole lot of oversight, so there are a lot of mistakes and misinformation. The only thing I really depend on there are the remarks, knowing that those are experiences of people with [possibly] much different environments than mine.

Jelinda,
I'll put you on my give a way list for spring. Your plant will look like both at different times and I really wonder if there are any real difference in them. My plants change dramatically from spring to summer to fall when I have to bring them in. Colors change tremendously. It really doesn't matter what cultivar as long as the species is right. If you see a lot of difference then ok. Also I have the variegated heart leaf ivy that carries the same name as my Double Dip. They are completely different. Double Dip is thicker and smaller leafed. Almost like a succulent.
Trying to find the species is the hardest part. If you know it then Dave's Garden is great. But to find the right species, I look at the nurseries that sell the plants with the proper names. I find this the easiest way.
I am no expert here but I will look into your request on ID's .

Maybe you can tell me where you find good pictures with names that make's it easier to id the plants. If you find that more reliable,i'm not having a lot of luck the way I have been doing it!!!

I had to have a medical procedure done yesterday and am having another tomorrow. My lovely husband knows I love hoya's and that I have been wanting a purple waffle plant. He went to lowe's and found one of each. But they both came from EA nurseries and may be labeled wrong,I think. When I looked up the botanical name of the waffle it looked nothing like a purple waffle plant? They had it labeled hemigraphis alternata, but the pictures of purple waffle plants on-line where labeled Hemigraphis exotica.

The hoya is a hoya, but there are 200-300 different species, some are even succulents, they have different water, light etc... requirements.I'm having a hard time finding much on this one labeled (I am Hoya "Bilobata" then under that it's printed Hoya tsangii.I can find both and also this plant they call DS-70.Apparently 2 plants got the same name and there was a big mix up and they appointed this plant DS-70
for identification, but the other names are still being used.BIG MESS over a typo someone made in naming a plant!!! I'm going to jump over to the hoya thread & see what they know!!!

Thank you so much for the cuttings, nobody has ever sent me anything like that from anywhere before.Your a very nice person. If you see a picture of any of my plants,(i may not have anything you don't have) you want a cutting of let me know.I will put more pic's on my profile just check it every now and then.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Jo

Jelinda,
'Glasshouse Works' is a great place to look over as well as 'Arid Lands Greenhouses'. I have been busy finding the differences between Pothos' and Philos'. I learned a great deal so far. Some types are almost impossible to tell apart. Also I find many mistaken ID's on local 'Big Box Stores' and Grocery stores. I have found some real deals thou.

Pothos vs Philos; For the longest time their considered the same. That was until the Pothos bloomed a flower. For botanist, it's all in the flower. Since pothos never bloom for us, we tend to confuse the species. I thing I found out is Philodendrons produce cataphylls, which are modified leaves that surround and protect the newly forming leaves. Don't know if they are on our pothos or Syngonium podophyllum. All this learning is giving me a headache.
