i was going back over some of my picts from when i first received some Podophyllum delavayi's in 2004 when i was still in So Calif. & i find some strange discrepancy's, all the plants were identified as P. delavayi and some showed dark red no fuzz stems and some showed greenish light pink no fuzz stems all being called delavayi. i lost most all these plants when i moved north.
Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/138cbd Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/2a52e5

the P. delavayi i have now have the greenish with very light pink stems with fuzz Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/e2999e
and smooth green stems Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/e94f8c

maybe Veitchii really is a specie ???

and as i mentioned previously i am paying more attention to all of the podo's this year
and something else i have noticed is the others (aurantiocaule, hexandrum, pleiantum, versipelle, & the diffome) all seem to have smooth green stems. Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/be5b2b

Kaleidoscope and spotty dotty both have fuzzy stems but spotty dotty has a dark red stem
Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/dc3f11 Thumb of 2020-03-06/Strever/eba06f

you are wondering where am i going with all this info ?? Smiling

the stems of the seedling crosses of kaleidoscope x spotty dotty cross and visa versa are not following the parents above it seems. both crosses seem to be more influenced by kaleidoscope whether as a seed parent or as a pollen parent

another point of all of my new observations is that
Guangxi which is supposed to be the same as Galaxy which is supposed to be the same as Kaleidoscope
all have a fuzzy stem Smiling and the leaves all look similar Smiling
Thumb of 2020-03-07/Strever/3441c0

and somewhere more then once it has been mentioned these might be a specie
https://www.plantdelights.com/...

so if i have crossed a specie with a hybrid of this specie then is that why all the off spring have mostly the specie characteristics ?

You would think so but some should show traits of the other parent plant. I have done 2 hybrids that look similar and results pretty much looked nothing like either parent. That was with Heuchera though.

Dick, this is my Spotty Dotty, at least that was the name it was given when I purchased it, no red stem, so wondering if it is another one.

Just was thinking RJ did you get yours from the re-release of Spotty Dotty or the original release. Mine came from the re-release. Dick I would think you have original plants, I wonder if there is a difference.

i think i have come up with the answer to my mystery plant above
as i said it is dark and the dark i am familiar with is delavayi
and last year i brought 2 delavayi's into the green house and i thought i returned them
but i'm guessing i only returned one D'Oh!
plus the mystery plant has grown a little more and i now can see the stem clearly
and it is smooth green with a hint of pink, the same as it's siblings in the garden

This is last Spring as 2nd year plants but you can not see stems to see color. They also never got the markings on your plants. Leaves got about 4 inches wide. And one went dormant about a month before the other so not sure it will come back. Hoping year 3 will bring a larger plant with markings.

Dick have you considered crossing Red and Brown Panda to see if you can get more dark ones.

once SD are established as yours seem to be they will send runners and start making baby SD's
i bet i have dug more then 100 baby's up over the years
not sure what makes the darker mottling whether it is heat or sunlight
i don't have the brown one Bob, just got the permission to post their pict
but a dark one sure would be cool, my red is pretty green at this time Sad
here is the latest image, still pretty small, hope it turns some red with age

They are in a pretty shady area, might have to try moving one if they both come back or get some more to try in different locations.

Looks good. Have you decided what to cross it with? Also looks like 4 are coming up is that more then it had when you bought it last year? I was looking at it on Keeping it Green but they want 46 dollars shipping for 1 plant to N.J. I want to see how the ones I get this year do before getting it.
