I'm still thinking about a name for my new lanai conversion. Orchid palace sounds a snooty as conservatory. I was hoping Janice would weigh in here but she has gone missing. I'm still leaning toward orchid conservatory or OC for short. By the way, I hung 20 feet of hanging rods in the all shade area as the Stanhopeas demanded it. I hung them out in the shadiest part of the greenhouse for one day last summer and killed one and burned the rest.

20 feet of hanging rods - the OC is looking great! Btw I would think that neither name is snooty, it is affectionate.
Calanthe Rozel dropped its leaves as the spike developed and is now blooming on a bare pseudobulb.
And my Laelia anceps is opening 5 spikes this year, here is a preview in the iglooed greenhouse. ( We got about 5 inches of snow today.) Without and with flash. I am watering the buds plenty, so they can open properly despite the sticky glue.
Carol, the buds on Laelia anceps have this really sticky glue on them, I suppose in nature there might be higher humidity/and or the rain washes the buds. In my surroundings the buds would have a hard time opening if I wouldn't help things along by spraying the spikes daily. It works.
I wonder if it's anything like ants on peony flowers?
Ursula your Calanthe Rozel and Laelia anceps are beautiful...nice pictures!
Jim, orchid conservatory ...is perfect!
Any spikes on a Laelia anceps need to be celebrated!
.... as Ursula opens a bottle of wine..
Oh and for Carol - here is the last of the L anceps spike to open.
A picture before I watered this cluster thoroughly - you can really see how the flower parts stick together. But it now will open properly.
I've been watching football. I guess that was a fumble. Either that or this Australian shiraz I'm trying for the first time. Here you go, the new Stanhopea row.
