Progress so far the first huge spike

Thumb of 2012-01-07/ge1836/4ef34f
Both spikes the second one is much smaller. I dont care it's such a thrill to see these bloom and they last for months.

Lots of nice fat buds there. I am a little concerned to see the bend in those spikes and worry that they might snap if left totally unsupported?

Would you please do me a big favor and post your nice spike pictures in the Anticipation thread? (This thread here is to show blooms.)
The thread "Anticipation 4" in Orchids forum

Surely your pictures will show up very soon here on this thread.

Carol, you are a girl after my own heart. If a spike breaks off, just buy a new plant in bloom! If a spike doesn't form, just buy a new plant in bloom.....could be how I ended up with all these plants....perhaps. Great cym! Jo Ann, look forward to your cyms every year. I am a happy girl in cym season!

Its pretty bleak here in winter and no snow makes everything on the landscape look worse.
I have some Amarilis about to bloom so I can see a flower now and then.

Gone Tropical, I could imagine that you might look for warmth tolerant Cymbidiums, if you want to see them blooming in your zone. Santa Barbara Orchids gives you that information.
http://www.sborchid.com/master...

Cymbidium ensifolium and its hybrids might bloom easier for you in your climate. And - Cymbidium Showgirl is warmth tolerant for sure. There are many more....

GT, are you feeding your cyms? They are heavy eaters.

yes, I do have the ones said to be for my area. Jim, I do feed them, but you could be right, I may have not fed them as much as I should have this past year. maybe too much shade...

Very nice, love the color.

More sun will help the Cyms bloom but introduce them to it a little at a time. Mine are in big pots and I fertilize with Osmocote. Whatever you use, follow the directions on the package. A dose of fertilizer and bit of water just may kick start some spikes at this time of year. I pull mine back into a little more shade in the summer as the Florida sun can be a bit too much.

While the Cyms do need light and feeding, I'm not convinced that the light is that important. I have mine scattered from full sun to almost full shade, and everything in between, and all are full of spikes, with the exception of the one that had it's spike broken off. I really think the temps are the key to blooms. We had a cooler summer than normal this year, and lots of up and down temps in the fall, and mine are doing much better than last year. It does depend on the cultivar though...some will take more heat than others.

Gone Tropical, your question about the Ctna Why Not has been moved along with your response to Jim's mounting demonstration.
You were not able to find the plant in the database because it has now a different name. ( I simply typed Why Not into the search box) It is not your fault, this is exactly why many people wring their hands about the re-naming.
Orchid (Guaritonia Why Not)

Jim I started up a new thread for you, I can post into that thread, but I can't unlock it. ( Need to ask Dave)

Some new stuff blooming here-
This Bulbophyllum medusae had 2 gorgeous mop-heads, both were just opening. I touched one of them, really, just touched it - and had it in my hand. So delicate! grumble, grumble Grumbling this one came from the Malaysian vendor last March's SEPOS.
