Wow, hard choice. I like the colour of Hakuna Matata, but it is very tall and a larger flower. If the small size of Star Child is one of the reasons you like it, and keeping the small size of Star Child is a priority, then I would go with Little Wild Thing.

Tut, tut, Mike and Ginny! Here is me trying to be restrained and what help do I get from you two?--Honestly! Hilarious!

Although if it wasn't for the fact that it goes over the postage limit I admit that I would bid on both but it would be another $13 postage.

First lot finishes in about 4 days (the Hakuna Matata x Star Child) so have time to decide. It is difficult as I have a lot of seeds now but with the daylily import ban I keep thinking I need to get new genes now, esp. If the European market is closed to us also after brexit.

Panic buying at its best (worst?) Smiling

Nikki,
Go ahead and buy them (says she who has bought nearly 100 crosses this year)!

Message the seller...they may be able to fit in another pack without having to charge more postage. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Can't wait to see pics of your babies!

Thanks Regina,

I put a bid on the Hakuna Matata cross but the other bidder clearly really REALLY wants them so they are above what I want to pay. Will bid on the Little Wild Thing cross and see what happens.

Will be a long time though before I can post pics, seeds take a looooong time to flower here as our growing seasons are so very short-- 5 years (or even longer) is not unknown for daylilies if you don't have heated greenhouses or specialist set-ups. Sighing!

Do you think your generally cooler summers have more to do with that than short seasons? Do you get a lot of cloud cover? Are you growing near or under trees? Is there a lot of shade on your seedling plot? Are you feeding enough? Traditional gardening lore says that too much nitrogen promotes rank growth and fewer flowers/fruit. Not only has that been disproven, but as monocots, daylilies are gross feeders that demand a good supply of nitrogen.

Rich Howard of CT Daylilies has a Dan Trimmer article on his site explaining this;
http://www.ctdaylily.com/trimm...

US growers in zones 5 and 6 can see a good portion of their crop bloom in the second season from winter-sown seed. In that situation, anything that hasn't bloomed by the end of the third season is unlikely to be anything special, and even if it were to have a nice flower, something with so little vigor probably shouldn't be saved.

@gardenglory, Hi Pam, I know the feeling! Rolling on the floor laughing

@JamesT

Hi James, I suspect that it is a combination of both, we get generally cool,wet gloomy summers with heavy cloud cover, plus we are at latitude 54 degrees north, at the moment we are down to fewer than 9 hours daylight each day and it is mainly very grey light, by dec21 it will be between 7 and 8 hours.

There isn't much tree cover in my garden and I supplement the soil with manure and alfalfa and feed with seaweed fertiliser.

I am afraid that daylilies and the British climate aren't really made for each other but I like them too much to give them up. Smiling

I just ordered five of the new 2018 Trimmer introductions:

CATHEDRAL OF LIGHT
HONEYSUCKLE SUMMER
JANE'S WONDERMINT
RUBY STARBURST
STARFISH WISHES

Since I'm leaving on a month-long trip to Iowa on Sunday and the Trimmers' website has not been updated yet, I went into the Advanced Search on the AHS Database and found them, and then I emailed the Trimmers to request and confirm my order and mailed in my payment yesterday. YEA!!! Hurray!

They say their website should be updated shortly, but it sounds like their newbies are in short supply so I'm really glad I contacted them before I left.
