critterologist said:Yeah I'm thinking I should have cut some stems from 'Rjenveld's Early Sensation', as they were not only up but also had fat buds before this cold snap... not sure if they've frozen now or not... Last year, though, they were pretty tough!

Same here -- clumps of daffs up well (and early) out there but we got several good icings from the recent storms passing through. I hope they will be okay.

Love the pics. Lovey dubby

ACK!!! I just found some buds on some of my Rjenveld's Early Sensation daffs. So early! Of course those buds are no where near ready to bloom yet and now it has gotten so cold.

It is really cold here and it has been on a 6 day run of cold weather. Not much going on outside around here. I shouldn't compain as fall and winter up to this was quite mild. But of course I am compaining ha-ha as I don't like cold weather at all. I haven't gone out and looked at the daffs since I found those buds on the 23rd. I bet they look the same.

Despite the fact that it's been cold here including not getting out of the 30's on Friday, Daffodil Ice King is blooming. I guess I should visit the backyard more often so that I don't miss these things. I also found some crocus blooming. I suspect the other bulbs will be taking off this week, since we're are expected to start getting temperatures in the 60's several days this week.

Thanks Rita. I have a several other dafffodils that are also full of buds now. We've got more rain, and warmer weather coming in the next week, so I suspect I'll be seeing more blooms in the next few weeks.

I went outside and checked my daffs. Sure is cold outside today even though the sun was shinning. I saw one bloom open but laying down flat on the ground because of the snow we had last weekend. But still, it is my first flower of 2013. So I officially record Feb 18 as my first daffodil bloom of the year.

Oh! That just isn't right! I'm in So. Cal. and the only Daffs that are more than 4" are the King Alfreds, and no buds on those yet. Confused

I took a walk around the garden. Daffodils up all over the place. These are ones I had in my garden, the ones just planted last fall are not showing yet. I find that the bulbs planted the fall prior always break ground later than the bulbs already in the garden from past years. There are even some more with flower buds showing but no more blooms. Only that one crazy very early bloomer. And it is still there, still looking the same.

It has been mostly cold since that first bloom. So I figgure that is why not much has been happening. We need some warmer weather.

The walkabout the garden today showed more daff blooms trying to open. Today is the day to take a look as we are going to get a winter storm starting this evening until Friday afternoon. Expecting at least 9 inches of snow. But the poor daffs are not doing that great, they are laying on the ground and not quite open all the way. Kind of stuck at that stage. We need this winter weather to end and spring to come so that more blooms can arrive.

Plenty of snow on the ground here althought it is supposed to hit 50 today and is sunny so at least the snow should melt quickly. Another warm day expected tomorrow. I hope this is the last of the snow and my bulbs can really get going with spring weather.

Early daffs in the little island bed of DLs & daffs out back are budding up! Yellow "jonquils for naturalizing" from Brecks in the back, yellow-to-white 'Ice Follies' in the front part. I can't wait to see it in its glory!

A week ago, I threw a lot of fertilizer everywhere with bulbs poking up. I got some "Bulb Tone" and some all purpose 10-10-10 and mixed them 50/50, figured that would cover all the bases, although I think (?) Bert told me that regular 10-10-10 was OK on its own also.

We stopped by Southern States last week to see the chicks (soooo sweet, and they must have 15 different kinds!), and that's where I found the Bulb Tone. They seemed to have the full line of Tree Tone, Holly Tone, etc.

We had a lot of rain the past couple of days, so assuming it didn't all just run off the bulbs should be very happy with all that food & water!
