You know, I think I read that same thing somewhere else about those Hawaiian spider plants. Green plant, variegated babies.....that turn into green plants.
Do I have that right, Alan?

Hmmm, I think maybe I have a spider plant with an identity crisis. Hilarious! Variegated plant that produces green babies. That in turn produce green babies. Green Grin! Maybe it really wants to be an Hawaiian spider plant? But it's confused. Rolling my eyes.

Lol! I grow my spider plants outside here, so they don't even need to be in the house :)

Sounds like a good idea Sheryl, will have to see if I can find another one! Smiling Or start you some of the babies.

Oh, just one baby would be great - please, don't even think about finding a whole new plant!

I hate it when a pot goes crashing down to the ground. Had some wind this afternoon, literally pulled the hook right out of the wood, and the pot crashed to the ground and cracked. I had to go out and buy a pot to replace it, and repot this beautiful Hawaiian Spider plant. I found one just like this one, only red, and drilled a new hole and reseated the hook. I don't think it will ever come out this time... ran some wood glue up into the hole too. Hehehe!

So far I think I have 4 or 5 spider babies which were a Christmas gift from a friend, and there may be 3 to 5 spiders in another pot. No one has given babies yet, however, I'm guessing that perhaps there may be some this season.

Now that I know what to look for, I'm going to keep watch for a Hawaiian spider. :-:

I recently received a Hawaiian Spider Plant, different from what I've seen in stores, from Hirt's Gardens. It is a beautiful plant with a dark yellow stripe down the center of the leaf with green edges. They label it as a "new" spider.

Here's a pic of some of my Spider Plant border which btw, they have both variegated and green babies. In fact, I grabbed up all the green babies to border one bed. And yet another bunch into a pot. They are quite prolific. But these are the variegated ones. I am sure there are some green babies hiding in there somewhere! Hilarious!

Pretty! Can't put them outside here; they either cook or freeze!
I started out with one lone variegated spider plant that the previous owner of our house left behind. It has produced both solid green and inverse variegated plants, along with little clones of itself. Poor little thing has nearly died so many times from neglect, but it just keeps bouncing back!

GardenGuyAZ said:I explained this in the my previous post.

"babies are very variegated. But when planted, as the leaves mature, they turn fully green, sometimes with just a slight tint of gold, where they were once white."

So if you see a plant with dark green leaves, and the spikes with the babies coming out are very, very variegated. This is the best clue you have for the Hawaiian Spider Plant. None others that I am aware of do that. Generally if the plant is variegated, the babies are variegated. If the plant has all green leaves, the babies have all green leaves.

Hi, I just had to post here because I have just been royally taken by a seller on eBay. He advertised baby Hawaiian Spider Plants so I bid on it and got it. $7.00 It arrived today and it is NOT variegated. It is green with a tiny tinge of cream in the center. It is a baby , that is the only true thing about it if what you say is so. :ro fl: I should have known because he did not reply to my answers when I questioned him about the cultivar name he used when he advertised his spiders. I only wish I could remember how he said it but it definitely said it was a Hawaiian but ignored my question about the cultivar.

I had been reading about them because I really want to know what I have and what I am getting and just happened to read the difference between a C.Comosum 'Variegatum' ( has darker green leaves with white margins) and the C. Comosum 'Vittatum' (has mid-green leaves with broad central white stripe). That is the only reason I knew the difference because I have been selling spiders for years but only decided I should know more about them. Now I am completely taken with them. I just had babies on my 'Bonnie' and they are growing which makes me happy. If I am correct, I have the Variegatum and the Vittatum but I would like to add more to my collection. I also have a green with a cream stripe that a friend gave me and I am not sure but I think it would be called a 'Picturatum'. He told me it was a solid green, but I can see the pale strip now that they are getting bigger. Could you help me out with the cultivar for that one? Is the cream center a 'Picturatum'? I am 85 y.o. and a bit late trying to learn, but I am at least trying.

I also would be interested in buying or trading new varieties if anyone has some to spare. I will pay shipping and everything. Thank you in advance for your help.

HI Woofie, Yes, I can show you some photos or do you mean the one I just bought that was not what it should have been. Confused

Here is the first one. The regular spider and I think it should be called 'Vittatum'-

Here is what I called the reverse spider plant but I think it is a 'Variagatum'.

Here is that one the man gave me and said it was solid green. I do not know the cultivar.

They are bleached from the weather in the greenhouse. They are usually a darker green and they have that pale cream line in the center. I have not had any babies yet since they are all young plants as you can see.

Then there is Bonnie but I have no pictures of her. She is the curley one.

That is all I have and if there are more I would love to get them if I know what they are and who has them.

Hmmm. Interesting. I see that Wikipedia does show the one with the white stripe down the middle as "Vittatum" (our database lists it as "Reverse Variegatum"), and the one with the white stripes on the outside as "Variegatum." I have the Variegatum and a couple of solid green ones that were produced by the Variegated one. I used to have one with the white stripe in the middle, but I lost half my plants to a freak freeze. What is odd is that all my plants are offspring of one original plant. Go figure. Rolling my eyes.
Well, at least your mostly solid green ones look healthy. Maybe when they get bigger, it will become clearer which ones they actually are. You never know, they just might produce little variegated babies. Smiling
