I could never spend a winter in Alaska. It would never be debatable.

aside from the COLD... i could not deal with the lack of daylight.

I can't wait to go for a visit though. we were planning a trip for this - next summer, but had to push it back a year.

Karen,

just think, next week it starts to turn around, adding about 30-60 seconds of daylight per day.

Yes, that's the only good thing about it. We know it will start getting better soon. Something to look forward to.

We got several inches more snow today. The drive to work was awful. If you look out my windows you can definitely tell that wintersowing season is here.

we still arent getting snow. we had one snowfall of maybe 3" - they forecasted about 5-7"

last night we were supposed to get 1-3" ... didnt get a flake.

we were warm-ish yesterday, sunny and about 30f, so a lot of it has melted.

I will start my WS at the end of Jan or beginning of FEB here. I have tried zip locks, but have had marginal luck with them. I like the yogurt cups that have clear bubble top lids the best. I will have to take pix of them when I start. I have used milk jugs but have not had luck with any one thing as well as the water bottles that I cut like a Pez dispenser and box tape shut. I have put some in oat meal containers too since the card board eventually degrades and the plastic lid keeps in warmth. I also love to use Ice cream cartons so I don't have to transplant a lot of fragile seedlings. I just put a few in and dig the hole in my bed, where I want them, Take the lid off and punch out the middle, keeping the ring and put plastic over it and push the ring down over it. That works if I use stronger semi transparent plastic. If I get a lot of rain in tends to weigh it down and drown the plants so I have better luck with them after the rainy season. I love to use them then. The plant can get really big and you never disturb the roots, the wax in the cardboard helps keep in the water too. I use gel crystals in there too. The desert gets hot and can give a heat wave any time of the year. It could snow one day and the next day it is 80 degrees.

I can't picture that, can't imagine what you mean. Could you post pictures? It's so interesting to hear about everyone's different methods.

Where do you live?

Karen,

the very few times I've use water bottles, about the 16.9fl oz size, they are very easy to slice right in those grooves... leaving a portion as a 'hinge' like we do with milk jugs... i've never heard the 'pez dispenser' term used... but it's accurate.

For me, the water bottles dry out too fast, so i dont use them anymore.. only 1 season i did.

OK, I think I know what you mean. And I read that @ 4:50 this morning so I probably wasn't awake yet.

Picked my son up @ airport this morning. His flight arrived @ 6:45. He had a direct flight so arrived on time. (In past years he has come close to spending the holidays stranded @ O'Hare). Stopped for a quick breakfast on the way home, and he's gone to bed now. So glad to have him home for Christmas. We haven't seen him in a year! He's our one and only.

Yes that is right. I have problems with moisture balance sometimes in all methods. Some get algae.

Karen, is your son in the military, or at school? I have a feeling he is young, because you hardly seem to be verry old, at least, not like me, turning 69 in Jan. Mike

No, he's not the service, no he's not in school, and no, I'm not so young!

My son is 30 years old. He moved from Ohio to Seattle the day after graduating from college. And I'm 58, so not all that young.

Our son just doesn't get home much- expensive, not many flights, and it takes so long to get all the way across the country. Connections are terrible, flights get cancelled...

I had to edit my last post for multiple typos. Santa brought me an iPad and I'm not very good with this thing! Confused

Karen,

there is a gal Anna [from DG too] who is interested in comments about the Ipad.

She has a thread going in the computer forum... I'm sure she'd love to hear pros and cons, once you have some.
http://cubits.org/computerqa/t...

I know there is also a thread in DG, as she posted in both places.

DG is 'interested' but wont buy until we are getting ready to head north for the summer.... Apr/May time frame.

Oh, Karen, you child you! 58 is very young, once you pass that 60 mark. I'm closing in too fast on 68 and I'd love to be 58 again!

I've not started my WSing yet and probably won't until Jan. Too many other things going on right now to get myself organized enough to start. Still got jugs left on the patio from last year and some plants in pots from last year's WSing, which never did make it into the ground. I'll probably do only a few this year Whistling
