I don't know Debbie. I don't even know how cold it gets down there in balmy La. But lots of southerners wintersow. I guess more important than the actual temp would be the length of time it lasts. Seed packs will often say to sow then refrigerate for 4 weeks or 2 months or whatever.

Debbie: You're a lot warmer and farther south than I am, but I sow mine after Christmas and into January, then leave them on their own. So far this has worked for me beautifully!

Thanks Karen and Angie. And you are both correct. Normally we are warm until the end of December. Not this year, however. We have already had 4 or 5 freezes. And next week looks like the same again.

I am going to start my seeds, on Dec. 21st.I do have a question; Last year I took the top off the milk jug, do I need to cut slots, at the top also?I noticed the jug, at the beginning of this fourm, and wondered if we need more vent. Thanks, Mike

I dont cut slots. maybe it's a personal preference, maybe it creates more air flow, or lets more water in....

where i cut mine in half, leaving just the hinge... i do not tape mine shut, like some do... i leave mine open, with one small piece of tape to keep it from swinging open.

Mike, you don't need extra slits as long as you don't use the screw-on cap. However, I find it easier to make a few extra slits in the top so that, when weather warms, it's easier to make extra openings with a start already there. (it's more of a challenge to cut jugs when they're full of little seedlings). That's why I usually add a few slits when initially prepping a jug.

I can hardly think about plants and seeds and gardening now. I still need to get a few Christmas gifts, wrap everything, do Christmas cards, put up a tree and decorate the house, etc. Ugh! And we're so busy at work, it's awful. Everyone seems to wait until the last couple of weeks of the year to have their surgery.

Thanks for the advice.
Karen, thats what we all face, and it gets worse with age.
We have a Simeese Kitten, that climbs up the Christmas tree, and knocks the decorations off. Cute. Mike

LOL Karen. That's what normally happens to me around the holidays. I've been known to put up my tree as late as Christmas Eve. But this year I have the tree up and lights on , waiting for the grandson to add his ornaments. I even have presents wrapped and under the tree already.

I thought I would love being prepared early. But doing it all early kinda took the excitement out of it. I love shopping in the mall on Christmas Eve. I know I'm weird.......... but at least I can still go to the mall Christmas Eve. Rolling on the floor laughing

Well, true enough we shot back up to 70 degrees today. Then tomorrow morning we will start again with the cold. I'm not sure when to put my jugs out. But I will give it some time to see if the weather levels out.

It's snowing here now, looking like wintersowing season. Forecast is 2-4" or 3-5", depending on who you believe. Also 40 mph winds with blowing snow, whiteout conditions at times, wind chills of 20 below zero. Your 70° sounds more appealing, Debbie.

we too are not expecting a lot, few inches but BLOWING howling winds. DH is going into the city today... thankfully --- i'm staying home where it's nice and warm.

Thank you all for keeping the snow up there. Smiling Yes Karen the 70 degrees was nice. But then it went back down to 25 this morning. Playing havoc with our head colds. Anyway, it's back up to 40 now and back down to 25 tomorrow morning. I give up trying to out guess it. What will be, will be.

Don't look north for symapthy! It's 20° now, wind chill 3°. Low tonight 10, and I'm sure wind chills will be below zero. Thumbs down

Nothing more fun than shoveling snow when its 14 degrees with a brutal wind. I thought I was going to freeze out there yesterday!!! It's even too cold to think about wintersowing.

However, it should NOT be 31 in GA! That just seems so wrong....

Stay warm, everyone.

It was 3° when I got up today, high was around 20. I had to do Mom's grocery shopping, then go to her place, then to about 4 more places for myself. It was miserable running in and out in the cold, slipping on bumpy ice in parking lots. More snow and ice due tomorrow.

Still lots to do for Christmas. I'll start wintersowing in January, as usual. I don't even know what I'm going to sow this year. My flower beds were stuffed full last year. But I'm afraid a lot won't come back after that drought.

Outdoor temp is accurate. Thermometer is on an outside wall so indoor temp is actually 70°
