Hi Folks,
If you need to stake your iris flower stems, what do you use to secure the stems to the stakes?

I use this type of stake for individual stalks. If you have a big clump that needs it I use the fence units that I get at Fleet Farm (and other places). They are about 12 to 18 inches wide at the top and narrow to the bottom where there are two stakes that press into the ground. My clump of Lacy Snowflake usually needs five fence pieces to go around.

It depends , somewhat, on what it is, that I'm staking.....I generally use bamboo canes for stakes, and some "longer than average " twist ties, for "single stalk" staking. (irises, glads, etc.) And for larger "clumps"......trumpet lilies, and such.....I put the "stake" as near the center as I can, and use baler twine . Shrug!

If I need staking, I do something similar to what Sue does. No twine, plastic ties, etc. Easier to put up, take down, and looks good.

I mostly use bamboo stakes. They aren't pretty, but they are cheap and they do the job. I have a few green metal stakes that I use too.

If something needs staking, it is on my short list.

I use bamboo stakes and place them in an angle to hold up the stalk. I'm too clumsy and rough to try and tie them with anything.

tI can'use the bamboo stakes because our soil is so rocky. I use plastic-coated steel stakes and velcro ties. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073P6XGYF/ .Expensive, but boy are they great in our rocky soil where bamboo stakes simply break going in. And the velcro ties are reusable: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057567U0/

Thanks for the velcro tie link! I've never seen those before - they look like they could be useful!

Poly, Thanks so much for the acorn!

I do love the velcro ties. After the iris have finished blooming I undo the velcro, pull the stake, then rewrap the piece of velcro around its stake before storing. That way it's ready to go, with a precut piece of velcro, for the next bloom season. Also, I think that the velcro is gentler around the iris stalk than a twist tie - snug, but gentle. I think the velcro is also easier to fasten and unfasten, for arthritic hands.
