'Maroon Krinkle' is holding its shape but losing a little of the dramatic color where I put it close to a S window in "foil room."


Can't get enough of the pretty pastel pink/purple highlights on K. laciniata. These 2 plants have taken root in little jars of water. They are sitting on a S windowsill.



Is this the cutest Kal of 'em all? IDK but maybe. K. millotii.

So, in soil in a warm climate, does this sprawl and take root like a ground cover?

Yes, and I think to more securely anchor itself against winds. Just took these pics of one brought in. These stems were stuck in that pot about a year ago.



Not really a set it and forget it plant. I usually put the old mama in the ground in the spring, enjoy it until frost threatens, then cut off the best parts and stick 'em in a pot, watch the blooms, take that old mama out in the spring, repeat.

My pleasure! Yours looks like it has a better light-spot. I'll be surprised if you don't see the tips question-marking soon in the first stage of inflorescence.

In previous years I've devoted first-row space to that kind of Kal but it was time to let a couple other things get the best winter sun to see if they can bloom. It's hard to decide which plants get the best spots. Some things I let go after a few years of observations. Donkey ears (gaston-bonnieri) is one of those. Just tooo big and surprisingly heavy, and needing more light than I even have to maintain a worthwhile appearance over winter, then hard to re-acclimate, even after having the best winter spot. I figured I'd seen what there was to be seen of it at this house.

It's in the only practicable spot I have, which is fortunately south-facing.

Ha! Keeps getting taller but the so-called bloom is decidedly anticlimactic. Ah well.

Yours are considerably more developed than mine! Was it indoors or out when that picture was taken? Time of year?

Mine was a mere cutting last spring. Maybe next year it will show more gumption.

If it was a bet, I'd wager that yours will develop into that look a few months. The quoted pics were from April 1. Those stalks had been on there for at least 5 months by then.

I was aiming more for how the "blooms" lasted a really long time, but that works also. I'm so glad to have someone else to observe because my same plant had an accident. A plantident. One day when it was really hot I thought I might have seen some scales on it so I put it on the other side of the carport away from anything else, meaning to check on it the following weekend, then completely forgot about it until recently. I never go over there - I guess until it's time to find dead plants. I'm not sure if it croaked from drought or cold, but everything in that little pot is a crispy critter now.

I should have put that on my plant list - that's what it is for - to remember to do things like that. It was only marked "potted" so it was assumed to be safe as far as taking about-to-frost inventory went. The list is only as good as my admin of it.
