I grow all my outdoor plants in containers, nothing on the ground. I have no grass in my yard, all in pavers, got to save water being in California. Most of my plants are drought tolerant, as we do have triple digit dry heat here come summertime. So about 80% of my perennials are succulents.
I also grow:
Lantana - slows down in winter, and comes back quite well in Spring
Lavender stoechas Anouk - this one I got from Costco in 2010 and it was grown like a topiary.
Gaillardias - Arizona Sun, Arizona Red Shades, Mesa Yellow - very resilient, blooms slowed down a bit in winter but manages to give one or two, and come spring, actively back to the blooming phase
Dwarf Schefflera and variegated schefflera
China doll plant - started like a little plant, but grew actively and has made several stems in the container it is in. Very prolific grower.
Hostas - Wide Brim, Aureomarginata, and one noid, all three in the shadiest side of my patio.
Achillea Moonshine or Golden Yarrow - very drought tolerant, love their fern-like leaves during Spring.
Dwarf Agapanthus - also very drought tolerant
Dicentra Spectabilis
Astilbe
Some daffodils and hyacinths
Tri-color pelargonium -lovely red blooms late spring and as the name implies lovely tri-color leaves.
Mini-cymbidium orchids
Chlorophytum comosum or spider plants
New perennials for this year that I got:
For this year I got 2 Salvias, Salvia subrotunda and Salvia Iodantha - still learning more about it. So far have noticed that it prefers to be in the shade, but will tolerate full sun as long as it is windy cool. Otherwise it pouts and looks almost dead under the sun. But revives well once put back in shade. I am still not certain if it hated the sudden downpours we had a week ago, it did pout, but bounced back once it had a chance to dry up. So am not sure if it hated being cold and wet..or just being too wet.
