Actually I'm in zone 8a this year, right on the edge between two zones and sometimes it changes. Rolling my eyes.

I'm loving everyone's container plantings! I really enjoy growing in containers. Most of my containers are cheap plastic pots (because I'm a bit of a klutz and tend to break terra cotta, ceramic etc. Many plants over-winter very well here in Florida unless we have a few back to back winter freezes, which occasionally happens. Some plants that grow as annuals elsewhere are perennial down here.

Virginiarose/Susan: The Pelargonium 'Vancouver Centennial' was a favorite of mine: Zonal Geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum 'Vancouver Centennial')
They grow about 12" - 18" tall and wide. I had a few of them that overwintered for about three years. The cold didn't end up killing them ... it was no water for four months and total lack of care that did them in! I bought mine at a Wal-Mart garden center a few years ago and I'm going to be on the lookout for them again this year! Even when not in bloom, the foliage is really pretty!

A few of my mixed container plantings, some current ... some past:

Mixed container/hanging basket with Coleus, Caladium, Ornamental Oregano and Tradescantia:

Thanks everyone.

Marilyn: Our old house (that we will be renting out later this summer after some renovation) has the swimming pool. The new house has a much smaller property, which is a plus in my opinion because as I'm getting older I don't want so much yard work!

I've always loved attracting songbirds to the garden and I have a few feeders out, plus there are trees and shrubs with lots of berries for the birds also. Here in the new neighborhood most of the homes have manmade canals that run behind the properties, so along with the regular backyard birds I get to see Heron's, Egrets and Osprey's on an almost daily basis as well! Someone recently asked me if I missed the pool but we hadn't used the pool in years so I don't miss it a bit. There was much more container grow area with the large screened pool deck and attached covered deck at the old house but in the new house there's a nice large deck that runs the length of the back of the house ... so I have lots of space for plants out there. We are considering screening the deck in the near future so we will be able to spend more time out there during the summer months and not have to fight off mosquito's!

I'd rather have a water canal with "Heron's, Egrets and Osprey's on an almost daily basis" than a pool. Lucky you! I envy you! Lovey dubby When DH and I went to FL for vacations, I'd love seeing all the birds, esp. 'the water/shore' ones! I miss seeing them, as we haven't been in FL since early 2006. Love the Brown Pelican! Lovey dubby

Thumbs up

Marilyn: I never really thought much about Pelican's until a year or two before my dear mother in law passed away in 2004. The Brown Pelican is a year round resident here and when my mother in law was in her later years (95, 96 years of age) and had a bit of dementia, I'd take her for rides along the beach every couple of days. She so enjoyed the Pelicans. She had been in Florida since 1950 but lived in the central part of the state so I guess she had never seen a Pelican or maybe with her memory loss she didn't remember them. She would get so excited to see them flying in formation or even perched on a piling. It made me realize how much we take for granted sometimes. The joy on her face when she spotted a Pelican always made me smile!
