Do you have the variegated or the reverse variegated spider?
This is the variegated:

Jb, Hi! Not sure if you were asking me or not... If so, my spiders are all plain green. The variegated plant behind the pictured baby is Dracaena marginata 'tricolor.'

What kind of light is best for the spider plant? Because of the glare on the tv in the Sun Room, my DH keeps the blinds closed till about dinnertime. I just moved the spider plant to the office, where it will get morning sun and I keep the blinds open..Is that sufficient? I guess I must have the varigated variety, it has green and white leaves. Has little babies but they don't have roots like the picture posted above. How long does it take for them to grow roots so I can separate them from the Mother plant and grow more? The plant is about a year old, re'd at a Fall 2011 plant swap.

You will need to give it more sun if you want it to grow and reproduce. You can google variegated spider plants and see what they say about how long it takes. I have mine in the greenhouse. They get afternoon sun and water when I water the greenhouse which depends on temps. , humidity. etc. Mine are not reproducing just now either. I think it is just not the right conditions. They are hard to kill and take little care, but they do need some sun and water. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I have never kept track of their growing habits.

Flower/baby stalks *usually* come out in spring, through summer, but plants can get in the mood any time of year. Once babies are removed, new stalks are likely to show up. The roots on the babies will come in time, impossible to put a date on it.

Mine are in the greenhouse and I looked at them today to see what they were doing. The regular variegated have some babies forming but the old plant forms all year. The younger plants are doing nothing. Now you know why I can not give you a decent answer. Sorry.

I grow my spider plants year round outdoors in full sun to part shade, since our winters are quite mild here. They grow like weeds here, so hard to kill. I water them heavily at least once a week with occasional sprays especially during very hot days. These plants likes to be pot bound and grows more babies when it is like that from what I see. It has such huge root systems that can really store water, so in case you forgot to water them for awhile, no worries, those roots really store them well.

Earlier this year I divided and gave away a lot of them....so interesting to see those huge plump roots...Right now they are back to being big and growing lots of babies.

Here's how the divisions of my spider plants went...and see their roots:

During winter, I just let the rains do the watering, and they may appear scraggly but as spring comes in, it recovers quickly and will bask in the warmth once more.

Hello, I have what I think is a Spider Plant but can find no picture that even looks close to it. Can someone here identify it for me? It has large leafs and very thick stems.

Saw this forum pop up after a long time silent and thought I would share some update my very favorite houseplants, the spider. I lost all my old ones months ago and one by one I keep picking up a baby here or there from people who know I just love them and do not want to invest in plants at my age anymore. I guess they just grow on you after awhile. I can't seem to do without them.

JB, glad you're finding new spiders! Picked up a new Bonnie in Phoilly this past weekend and thought of you. Mine's just a baby, nowhere close to throwing spiders, so I'm glad you found a start elsewhere!

I am so limited in what I can do just now that I have to find ways to keep my mind on :Happy things. I love spiders. I do not know if anyone has any idea how many different varities of spiders there really are. My plant list still has all of my collection on it and I would love to replace all those that I have lost from the one horrible problem they do get. It is that scale that starts out as a white tiny spot or baby and grows into a brown spot and it just sucks the life out of the plants and goes into the soil and survives and lives on to kill other plants. I got it from a bag of bad soil. I was so upset.

You will love Bonnie. She is relatively a new species that was first sold commercially in Holland about 1999. It makes a beautiful Hanging basket plant.

If you are interested in getting some different varieties, I would be happy to send you babies of mine if and when I get them. They grow to fast it should be just a few months.
