If it is a plastic pot, I use Dave's drill, and drill about 4 smaller holes around the bottom.
If it is ceramic, hopefully someone else will chime in...I only tried it once, and despite using a ceramic drill bit and tape, I still cracked, so I haven't been brave enough to try again.

I do put screen, or coffee filters, or gravel in the bottom of all my pots.

Yes, the plastic ones are easy to drill. I've never had the nerve to try ceramic.

BUT I think there should be a law against manufacturing flower pots without drainage. Glare

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I agree They are hard to drill and you never know if they will break. I just use the plastic, the others are to heavy. Good luck.
Would a tile store know how to do this?

I stick a nursery pot inside the pretty one, and cover the whole thing with moss. Seems like the prettiest ones don't have the hole!

I've drilled holes in a number of terra cotta and glazed containers using a spearpoint drill bit.

They're designed for drilling in ceramics and glass. Thumbs up

My hubby has drilled holes on ceramic glazed containers using a ceramic masonry drill bit with a diamond tip. He says when drilling, it is better if possible, to have the container in a vise grip or make sure it does not go wobbly while drilling otherwise it might break. Recently we bought ceramic dipping dish and he drilled it so I can put my new little succulents Big Grin He drills the pot from the outside.

I use either cut out landscape fabric or pre-cut plastic pot mesh from Daiso stores, or pre-cut screen mesh from OSH hardware to cover the holes. If the container is too pretty to drill, I just use it as exterior pot and have a slightly smaller inner pot that has holes where the plant is potted in.

I gave up on the coffee filters to hold the soil in the pot. They don't last long. DH drills holes in the plastic ones, but I'm not about to let him try ceremic ones. The colorful material they use on bunches of cut flowers seem fairly strong and I'm going using that in the bottom of my pots. I usually have him drill several small holes.

Frillylily, if you don't wet the area while drilling, it'll wear out the drill pretty quickly.

What I do it is fill up an old "sports" water bottle (with the flip top) like Poland Spring and squeeze water onto the contact point while I'm drilling.

btw, I'm a big old weakling with no upper body strength, and I found this to be very easy!

Oh, and I didn't purchase the drillbit from that website. That was just to show you what it looks like. I found one at HD pretty easily. Smiling
