So far Michigan has been just what I expected. To date November is averaging 45 as a high and 34 as a low.

But after Florida and so much humidity, this is refreshing! 88-94 degrees day after day for 4-5 months to me is worse. Dew points of 65-80 drive me to approach a meltdown. Winter in Cape Coral was for the most part just like Summer in Michigan!
But the Magic Factor continues to be my kids are 15 minutes away!! That trumps everything in my book. Thumbs up

Your most welcome Lindsey! Once you get 4-5 months into that Neem treatment, not only will thrips be gone but mealies, aphids and other beasties will have a hard time getting going! Scale too!
Oh I am so happy for you!! Welcome! Thumbs up

I have a couple of new orchids today - Patty went to Raphael's open house on the weekend, and picked them up for me as I couldn't go.
Patty says I'll probably need to grow this one in the house in summer, to keep it cool enough - we shall see. In the meantime if it would just cool down . . . these cool orchids would be happy for a few months anyway.

Elaine, just locate the Miltoniopsis in shade. The heat, with sun, will make these guys suffer. If you have an oscillating fan blowing on it might work too.

Yes, I do have a fan, but was going to try locating these in the shady border area under my biggest oak tree. It is almost always much cooler under there, and a nice breeze funnels along that side of the house, too. The Miltoniopsis is fragrant, though. My experience is the scented orchids attract critters, so I'm not sure about letting it out of the cage. Will try it there and watch it carefully for critter damage. My 'Little Stars' is in full bloom now with 3 lush spikes open. The scent at night is fabulous, and the local raccoon has been visiting at night.

I took the Milt. out of it's little 3in. plastic pot and it seems to be growing in straight sphagnum moss. Since it has a large mat of roots outside the pot on top, I'm thinking I should pot it up - more moss, or use some other coarse medium mixed with moss??

We'll see how the new babies do over the winter, and if still looking healthy when the weather warms up, I'll make a decision on it then. I haven't had great luck with either of these types, but both my skills and the growing area have improved a bit since I tried last so there's hope for better success this time.

Anybody have an opinion on ants living in/on my Schomburgkia cross? These are known to be ant host plants, but I think these are carpenter ants and are living in the cork that the plant is mounted to. I have two nice spikes on this plant but when I submerged it in a tub of rain water this morning, a bunch of fairly large ants crawled out onto the foliage to stay out of the water. Didn't really see where they came from, but I don't think they were inside the pseudobulbs. Ants don't usually harm the plants, but ??

I don't know about the "host" issue, but there are sure a lot of large ants here in FL. I have already had several of my orchids get infested with them, orchids hanging under trees. I just put a small sprinkle of Orthene over the media and the next day there were no ants.

It is my understanding the carpenter ants are eating the bark and other organic material in your potting mix. I had a terrible problem with them last spring. A bit of diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the soil surface and some under the pots for those on a solid surface like a bench, did the trick and, unlike Orthene, it is harmless to humans and beneficial insects.

Ants farm other citters like scale and mealies.

While we just had a new water heater installed, I see a whole bunch of lovely posts! Lovey dubby

Yes, thanks Ursula. I did check for other bugs that the ants might be farming, but they weren't on the foliage at all until I submerged the cork mount to get the roots well soaked. Pretty sure they're carpenter ants living in the cork. No sign of insect damage that I could see, either.

DaisyI said:Okay, stupid question... I see that my photos have now been associated with... nothing... in the database while this plant awaits a real name. My question is, how will it ever be associated with the right name (assuming it has siblings out there somewhere) without the parentage also listed?

Sorry for taking so long to reply, Daisy - haven't caught up on this thread until now.

I put the parentage in the caption for the photos. I check the genus-level entries occasionally (i.e. once a year) and move any that I can identify to the appropriate spot.

The Ceratostylis retisquama is very pretty. I have always adored that plant. I have to look up the name change, actually the species name, because my first introduction to that species was as Ceratostylis rubra!
I guess rubra was too descriptive compared to retisquama?!?! Rolling on the floor laughing

Maybe it was simply a case of finding a species name that was published earlier? I just know that if my "squama" became "retised", I would go see a doctor or maybe a Horticulturalist!! I tip my hat to you.
