Peach-Leaved Bellflower (Campanula persicifolia) |
Have Corner |

Canna Lily (Canna 'Pretoria') |
Have Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, 4-6', summer These are really striking with the zebra foliage and have done well in the barrels. I don't think I've ever gotten a bloom though. 2022: I got 3 tubers with the thought of putting them in the barrels. As usual, 2 didn't look viable so I just planted all 3 in the Z5 garden by the porch. Hopefully I'll see at least one. Yep. That's what I got - one. I don't know why I keep buying these things from Van B. |
||
Canna 'Stuttgart' |
Have Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, 6-8', summer. I've planted these a few times in the water barrels. Gorgeous variegated foliage. 2019: From Van B. One was mush. The other 2 did OK, but not great. |
||
Canna Tropicanna® |
Prev Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, 6', summer. If grown in the water, fertilizer stakes make them grow much larger. Striking variegated foliage. I've grown these a few times and they really are nice. I've had them bloom in the barrels, but the foliage is the star here. | ||
Canna (Canna indica 'Louis Cottin') |
Have Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, rich, moist to wet, 18-30", summer-fall. Pretty bronze foliage. I grew these in the barrels at least once in the past. I also grew one in a pot that year that did well. 2021: Ordered 2 tubers from Wild. I got one teeny tiny little thing that I have no hope for. I planted it in a clay pot anyway and we'll see if anything comes up. I got a refund from Wild, but don't buy Cannas from them anymore. I got some bad ones from them last year too. Update - the sole survivor didn't survive. |
||
Canna (Canna x generalis 'Black Knight') |
Prev Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, will grow in water, 4-6'. Cannas rarely bloom for me in the water. They do better if I put fertilizer spikes in the pots. I usually only grow a few cannas for their foliage in my water barrels. This one has lovely burgundy tinged leaves. |
||
Canna (Canna x generalis 'Futurity Pink') |
Have Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, will grow in water, 18-24", summer-fall. Burgundy bronze foliage 2020: Bought 4 from Gilbert Wild. One went into the Z5 garden and 3 went into clay pots for the water barrels. Only 1 came up in a pot. Damn! |
||
Canna Lily (Canna x generalis 'Maudie Malcolm') |
Prev Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist, 3', summer-fall. I grew this in a pot on the porch one year. It bloomed nicely, a pretty shade of pink. |
||
Canna (Canna x generalis 'Pink Beauty') |
Prev Tender/Annuals Water |
FS-PS, moist, 3-6', summer. This one was a little shorter when I grew it in the water. The leaves had a bit of variegation to them, so it looked nice. |
||
Canna (Canna x generalis 'Rosemond Coles') |
Prev Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist, 2-4', summer. I grew these one year and they did really well. I had one in a pot on the porch and some more in the Z5 garden, when it was a newer garden. They all bloomed and looked lovely. |
||
Canna (Canna x generalis 'Wyoming') |
Prev Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist, 3-6', summer. Purplish foliage. I remember that the foliage of this canna was really striking in my water barrel. I can't really remember the bloom, but many times they don't bloom for me in a season. I guess that's why I go for the prettier foliage varieties. |

Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Anaheim') |
Will Vegetables Vegetables this year |
75-80 days. Heirloom. SHU: 500-2500 - Mild, hotter when red. We usually have pretty good luck with these. We usually throw them in salsa or sometimes stuff them for rellenos. 2023: 3 plants from seed. Got planted out really late, but look healthy enough. SE end. 2022: 1 plant from start. Planted out from GH June 6, northwest end. We got some peppers off this plant. They got thrown in the salsa. 2021: 2 plants from seed. Our peppers all did great this year! 2018: These did well |
||
Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Ausilio') |
Will Vegetables |
70-90 days. OP. SHU: 30,000-75,000 Medium to hot. They vary. A tasty, hot pepper. Nicely shaped, smallish, blocky red peppers with fairly thick walls. Slightly sweet undertaste. 2021: From a purchased start. Our first taste of this on August 25th. Planted out sometime in late May. Seems fairly prolific - some fruit rotted on the vine because we didn't pick it. Nice, smallish, shiny bright red peppers with a tasty little kick to them. These are heirloom, so I might try to save some seed. I have found seeds online for sale. We put some in the salsa and some in a chile relleno casserole. We're really liking these! |
||
Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Barracuda Poblano') |
Will Vegetables |
95 days. Hybrid. SHU: 500-1000 2022: Planted 3 SW corner. These did OK and had quite a few peppers. They didn't get very big though. |

Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Chardonnay') |
Prev Vegetables |
70 days. OP. Green to yellow bell pepper 2022: Bought a start. Planted out from GH in NW corner June 6. None of the bell peppers did anything to write home about, but this one was probably the least productive. Tiny, shriveled up, thin walled things weren't worth picking. I'm done with bell peppers. I can buy better ones at the store. |
||
Jalapeno Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Early Jalapeno') |
Prev Vegetables |
66 days. OP. SHU: 2,500-8,000 These used to be my go-to jalapenos, but I've since switched to the bigger varieties to get more bang for my buck. They grew well for me. |
||
Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Early Sunsation') |
Will Vegetables |
70 days. Hybrid. Green to yellow bell pepper. 2021: Planted 2 of these from purchased starts. I got quite a few small peppers from the 2 plants, but I picked most of them green because frost is coming this week. We did get a few yellow/orange ones. Probably the best producer this year for bells. |
||
Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Flavorburst') |
Will Vegetables |
75 days. Hybrid. Lime green to yellow bell pepper. 2018: These did fairly well. We got some peppers. |
