Has anyone else noticed early scapes this year. Haven't even been looking for them since the last two years they have generally started in early June. I was out clearing out some wild onions and have found
3 that have scapes. Orange City is one that hasn't had a first bloom yet (3yr) and it is showing 2 scapes. Another is Blue Haired Girl she is an EE so that might make sense but the previous 2 yrs bloomed in July
scaped in June. The last is a brand new one I planted last summer with one fan. It is putting up a new fan with a scape. Can't remember the name right now.
I am going to check some more today. It is my understanding we had more snow and cold this winter (I am in FL) could this be why? Just curious if this year seems early to anyone else here in the north. We have had a few warm days but mostly 50-65 along with some frosty nights. We have been back since April 21.

Here I grow Dumortieri, and judge how my season is going by that. It had its 1st blooms yesterday, I think that is the latest it has ever bloomed. It usually blooms in April, the earliest I have recorded is April 15, but I feel i remember it even earlier. My iris blooms are a little late this year. By this time they are usually at peak bloom, but several days behind for them.

I haven't found any scapes yet and I typically get my first bloom the first week of June. I think things will start blooming late for me. My earliest iris was about a week late in blooming this year compared to last year.

Thanks for all your info. Guess I will chalk it up to being lucky or maybe they are now settled in and this will be the norm. Just found one on green turtle key today also an EM. Lots of other EMs have nothing. I am not going to complain about getting early blooms. Hurray! Hurray! :hurray:

It seems to me that the weather and bloom patterns keep getting weirder. Here in Tennessee this past winter was relatively mild, historically speaking, but started with an early cold snap and ended with some nasty hard freezes. So the figs are all doing fine because the really cold spells were brief, but daylilies are advanced or retarded, depending on their location. The ones down in the valley got the brunt of the lingering chill and were bitten back and delayed. The endless potted stuff (ironically) is higher than the inversion layer and more protected and is going gangbusters now. So, location of plants and their microclimates matters, and when and for how long it was cold, matters. I'm sure there are additionally factors that reference the past year, like moisture levels, but that's another story.

Daylilies
I am 5b. I found this freak today. I do not know what this daylily is thinking. I planted it spring 2020 from a Gilbert Wild lot of Mahieu seedlings. I saw no other scapes in a casual examination of my collection of daylilies. Last year Stella de Oro first bloomed June 10th and this plant first bloomed June 14th. Weird. Thinking

Where I live a lot of businesses have Stella. Over the past week, for fun, I discreetly looked over 100 clumps of it. I found but a single scape from all that.

I do not own Stella myself. But this tells me to be much more patient with my own daylilies. Thumbs down Not good at patience.

Everything is running late in our part of zone 6a due to prolonged cold earlier. I use my earliest one, an unnamed daylily, as an indicator. It's similar to Nancy's @lilyfan H. dumortieri and mine often blooms around May 5th. There were no scapes showing when I left on May 4th.

Justine @HemBrain, excellent points about microclimates! Cold settling into valleys is one of the reasons orchards and vineyards are generally planted on high ground.

There are places in my yard where there are as much as 10 days difference in first bloom time on the same cultivar.

Okay, I'm not the only one. I checked for scapes yesterday on all the usual suspects and no sign of a single scape on any cultivar. Most of the plants looks great because of abundant rainfall and no late hard freezes. I'm beginning to get a bit worried that what I thought was going to be a great season is going to be instead a sad one. My iris and lilies are doing spectacularly well so I had high hopes for the daylilies. Crossing Fingers! everything is just running late. We are expecting temps this weekend in the high 80s-low 90s. Maybe that will wake up these plants!

Yeah!!! I went out this morning and found two scapes on Butterscotch Ruffles! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I guess the overnight rain and warmer temperatures have finally kicked things into gear. It should be a couple more weeks before any others have scapes. BR is always my first bloomer and typically by a couple of weeks.

FFO in my daylily collection.

What would cause a daylily to have an early scape? It is not near a building or vent or any such thing.

@Lee5b, from what I understand, some daylilies have scapes that were "left over" from the year before. Maybe someone else can explain it better.

@Lee5b, I found these threads that I think reference what may have happened in your daylily.

I lost the scape coming up on Blue Haired Girl kinda turned yellow and gone. The others were doing well until I found one broken off on the ground one morning. Not sure what happened there. The other 2 are good and I have one on Druids Chant also. Now I may be wrong, (I'm old, my memory isn't what it used to be) but I thought the scapes usually come from the center of a fan. Everyone of these early ones are coming from next to a fan. Could these be as above prebloom/rebloom?

I have always had my evergreen plants throw scapes from the center of the plant, but my dormant plants tend to scape from the outer parts. That is basically the only way I can tell the two apart.
