Today's Salvias of the Day is Rose Leaf Sage (Salvia involucrata 'Hidalgo').

This plant can be found in the ATP Plant Database at:

Please join in, if you own this plant! We would love to know more!

Also, please consider adding a "Local Report" to the ATP Plant Database! Thank you!

I have Hidalgo in several places in my yard. It roots easily from any branch touching the ground or from a cutting. I really love the color of the blooms, but it tends to be a bit more lanky and long-branched here. The leaves sometimes have a reddish pink highlight to them. The branches tend to flop over because of the weight and length that they grow. That usually happens after a good rain, too. I've tried trimming them back to try to get the plants to be more dense and lush, but it tends to be more woody here. (Maybe it would grow better in a different climate. I don't know.) As the reason I grow most salvia, the blooms on Hidalgo attract hummingbirds. It also blooms year round here for me. The blooms are sporadic, even in a bud cluster, so it doesn't make a big statement of color. But it tolerates neglect and abuse (I dig them up to move them on occasion) and also grows well in partial shade. So it will remain in my garden.

I was surprised that I have not taken a photo and added it to the Plant Database. Will have to do that in the future. I recently pruned mine back, so it will be a while before it blooms again. Another month or so.

@beckygardener

When I grew this in 2012 and 2013 (new plants each year), I noticed honey bees, bumble bees and hummers at the flowers. Yes, it is a large plant and takes up space, so I decided to stick with a smaller Rose Leaf Sage (Salvia involucrata 'Mulberry Jam'), which I and the hummers love. It has a deeper rose pink color. Hybrid Rose Leaf Sage (Salvia 'Mulberry Jam')

I'm pretty sure Mulberry Jam blooms earlier, which is important in shorter growing seasons.

But Hidalgo is still a great and beautiful salvia.

Marilyn - I obtain salvia based on their bloom time. I use cultivars and species that bloom in late Fall, Winter, and very early Spring when the hummingbirds migrate and are here on the east coast of Central/South Florida. Or if plants bloom year round as Hidalgo does. I have not seen bees use mine, but I have seen the large Sulphur butterflies use it.

I have heard of Mulberry Jam and will have to look further into information on it. Thank you!

Marilyn - I see that it blooms Juneā€“mid-October. Bummer! That won't work for me because I rarely have hummers during that time of year. I just start seeing hummers passing through at the very end of September and early October, but the over-wintering birds typically start showing up in late November. Sad

Becky

You can grow some during that time you mentioned that I'd love to grow here. Some very desirable salvias won't work for me, because of their bloom time. Sighing! Sad
