Two Tall Bearded irises opened yesterday, marking the first ones to open this year. My Purple seedling.

And on a short stem, Earl Of Essex, thank you Arlyn. Two blooms opened at once.

I went back and checked the opening date last year, and it's two days later then last year. The first to open last year was Raspberry Swirl. That one has some color showing this year, but will be a couple days yet before it opens. Looking around yesterday, I can see that there are bloom stalks on most of my irises. Now baring any stalks rotting off, I should have a nice bloom season. Crossing Fingers! I did find one stalk split off yesterday, not rot, just split off. It's down to 32 here this morning again.

I'm pretty much done here, so it's great to see your starting and extending the season for those of us on the left coast.

The Earl did that last year for me. Short stalk but great blooms. That was it's first year here, too. It didn't bloom this year.

Love that seedling color.

The purple seedling is an accidental one that came where I had planted a black one some years ago. Back then I didn't know that irises couldn't revert back in color, but that's what I though it was at the time. The black was a potted iris I bought from a nursery, and there were a few rhizomes in the pot, so I really don't know if it's a seedling or if there was some other iris rhizome that got mixed in with the black one. But, since the black one died, and it was a few years later that this one showed up it's most likely a seed that germinated from the black one. It seems to be very hardy here, and has not ever rotted here. I haven't heard if it has been bothered by rot in other places. I have it in a couple of places in the gardens. I crossed it with Adriatic Waves and Art House and there are a few of them putting up bloom stems this spring. I'm hoping to add some of it's hardiness and get some ruffles and lines going. We'll see what we get. Smiling

This is the Earl's second season here, and it had a few frost's on it too.

The new camera seems to capture the real color more closely then my old one did.

Really looking forward to your other seedlings.

EofE is pretty tough from what I can see. It blooms when it wants to regardless of what's been thrown at it.

F of E is that way....it takes almost "perfect" conditions to get nice "form".....seems a lot was sacrificed in order to get rebloom ! It's only been the last 10 years, or so, that rebloom AND good form and flower shape has really started to come together, consistently .

Your "purple" should open here today, too, Tom (although it won't have the honor of being "1st".....and, it is showing some rot, as is your red noid, but....so is everything else Shrug!

Well, I guess it's caught whatever super rot bug you got going on there. I just found one of my new seedlings with a rotten bloom stem that was about a foot high, so now that's one I can't see until next year. I tried to break open the bud and see what colors where there, but it wasn't developed well enough to have any color. Supposed to have a short dry spell here now, so maybe that will slow down the rot. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Tom -- your purple seedling is always among the first to open here. I've had no problem with rot, even though it grows right next to Jukebox Hero which had a lot of rot problems this year................

Super bug is right, Tom Glare . I had "visitors" in the garden, most of the day (they showed up about 8:30, and left about 1;30)....the County Extension, her "Superior " from the University, and two gals from the "master gardener" program........we dug, inspected, sampled , dug some more, took soil tests, took soil samples , and bagged about 30 iris (or , the 'remains" of 30 iris) for lab testing at the University.....they all agreed there is a "problem", each one postulated a different cause....which , after much discussion....were mostly all rethought, and changed at least twice.....so, after I get the report from the lab at the University (and probably mortgage the house to pay the bill Sticking tongue out ), I *hope* to be presented with both a positive ID on the culprit, and a *cure*.........but, Shrug! who knows !

Knowing what the problem is would be a great help. We have SDBs & not many of those in bloom. Our nice winter with little moisture has caused problems. The signal on my Aril-median seedling is not as red this year. It's brownish sibling is not as nice, tan with brown signal ( which is not as dark this year) Evidently the small amount of moisture affected the color as well. Strange the color of the SDBs seem ok as well as my aphylla cross although the stems are shorter. Photos are in the camera.

Arlyn, after all the money you have spent buying and re-buying plants, it may be a savings in the long run if you can ID the problem with a specific treatment.

Arils & arilbreds have a splash of color under the beards. Siberians have the color where a beard would be.

Well, the historic Siva Siva has opened a few this morning. They are not relaxed yet, but I couldn't wait to take pictures before the sun got too high in the sky, I may take some better pics this afternoon.
