The sun never sets on the Kingdom of the Daylily.

Welcome to the start of the blooming of the Southern Hemisphere where, we of the other side of the world show our booming blooms in Season 2016-2017.

My first has flowered today on the last day of August. Spring is next month although you mightn't notice: we don't seem to have a winter anymore.

This is PURPLE RIOT's first ever bloom for me. It is one of the Australian Nunan's cultivars. It hasn't opened fully yet in the overcast conditions. But I thought I would let you see it first before the cockatoos do.

You sure are getting an early start on spring this year Glen! I like the intensity of that color.

A beautiful colour Glen. Nice it is blooming before the meltdown temperatures start.

Today I had a purple NOID partly open. Was waiting for it to fully open then take a pic of it next to my La Iris GARNET STORM DANCER which has nice blooms on it and is a similar colour. But it didn't open any more.

I almost picked up a small snake today when finished remaking a compost heap. I have been careful but gardeners...

Karen, it is a male Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles. They are nesting outside my bedroom window.

Karen, the island has much natural vegetation and the fauna is still quite common. But clearing is starting to get worrying because land is cheap.

Just curious, Glen, what are your daytime highs and nighttime lows right now? Humidity? What would those numbers typically be at peak bloom? I have no concept of Zone 12a.

A couple of weeks ago we watched a documentary on Australia, Crocodile Dundee, and in the early "Outback" sequences there were huge flocks of Cockatoos everywhere, like seagulls at a landfill. I felt your pain.

Ken, this is a historical climate summary of my area. Alas, I haven't the faintest if 12a is correct. But it can be very hot and wet and humid. I tried to find a corresponding area in the US. The data is in centigrade and millimetres. Temp 9.5-29.4, rainfall 1840mm, humidity 60%.

http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/...

The Southeast of Queensland is one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. It is humid subtropical or warm humid.

Peak daylily blooming is late October to early November.

In Australia, today is officially the first day of spring, 1 September. Happy SPRING all!

Cynthia, I can see several more scapes now coming up. I love this time of the year. I just bounce out of bed.

As well I have planted plants from Bron and I have seeds coming from Tasmania from Della.

Ann, it is a local native: Everlasting Daisy or Paper Daisy Bracteantha bracteata. However, there are many cultivars of it now throughout the world. It is one of my favourite plants and grows amongst my daylilies. I have to watch them, though, because they can be vigorous and crowding.

My SFE of PURPLE RIOT.

It was frustrating waiting to photograph the bloom. I had to wait till the Masked Plovers with their recently hatched, spoilt babies left the front yard.
