Hello everyone

I haven't been around for ages! Glad to be back after so long lol ;-)

But I'm prompted to come on here just to see if anyone who have an iris called 'Affaire' (bred by Blyth, R 1992), can confirm that their 'Affaire' have strong PBF or not?

There was no mention of PBF at the AIS website, nor shadowood and my alleged 'Affaire' is strong with PBF.

Below is an image of Affaire (A) provided by Barry Blyth and my 'alleged Affaire' (shown at right).

I really need confirmation that the actual Affaire doesnt have PBF Crossing Fingers! Whistling

Do you have more pictures of "Affaire B"? They could help.

My guess straight out of the box on just these two pictures is that you do NOT have "Affaire". There is no white edge to the Falls on yours that is distinctive on the edge on the Blyth. Your plants standards are tightly bunched up (other pictures may show this "trait" relaxing making it a non-issue). If this "bunch" stays throughout the bloom, this would indicate not being Affaire.

On the plus side, the standards do appear to have the same type of yellow veining on the standards and the purple/lavendar tint to the standards appears to be the same.

MORE PICTURES PLEASE!!!

Has it bloomed yet this year?

Also, it seems your mystery iris has some faint or small "broken" coloring in red. If that's the case, that should help in the identification.

Little breaks in color sometimes happen because of weather conditions. I have had this happen on a few iris in my garden.

I agree that more pictures would be helpful. I am not positively convinced that your Affaire is outside the range of variation for Affaire.

I have actually taken quite a few images in the last few years (just not this year)....hold on lol

Here's 2 images taken when the clump was situated in a full sun position and had been for 2-3 years. This alleged Affaire was darker, blotchy with elongated falls. It was looking rather crumpled looking..like someone had crumpled it up then tried smoothing it out again.
I couldn't make up my mind whether I like it or not...but decided to 'pot it up' due to re-arranging the layout of the gardens and left it in a half shade position.

Thumb of 2016-12-02/Firecentaurr_NZ/578231 Thumb of 2016-12-02/Firecentaurr_NZ/acd1c6

Then the following 'blooming season,' this alleged 'Affaire' was much more 'finer looking' compacted and lighter

One thing for sure, and I thought I've photogrpahed the base of the foliages (just found out that I hadn't D'Oh! ) it had a strong presence of purpling at the base of its foliage...the same extent as Bayberry Candle.

And I'm hoping (crossing my fingers Crossing Fingers! Whistling lol) that the real 'Affaire' doesn't have any PBF.

I have to consider that someone had dabbled with breeding and that this is an unregistered iris and I kept thinking that its lineage is with Beach girl...but every time I think of streaks and broken colours, I'd be thinking of Kasperek lol ;-)

Big Grin Yes, I've noticed it with 'Autumn Prince', when we had quite a few days of heavy rain or a week of rain and within a week, the blooms unfurled and some looking quite washed out. I've not had any breaking out with streaks or broken colour yet (except for this alleged 'Affaire' which varies slightly depending on full sun position and sun/shade position. Shrug!

Yours is definitely missing the white rim around the falls, and is much darker than other pics I have looked up. I wish there was a picture of Affaire's style arms to compare with yours.

There is one thing they both have in common - the rumpled falls. The pics of Affaire in our database also have crumpled falls. I wonder if you have a seedling from Affaire......

Oooh I was seriously contemplating on destroying it after having grown it for several years and becoming more convinced that its not 'Affaire' it would be awesome to know whether the real Affaire have PBF or not.

And I just couldn't bring myself to destroy it as it's ugly as well as unusually pretty lol Blinking And is a very good increaser with the obvious PBF.

Yes I agree with you entirely Lestv as I think my one is darker and lacks the faded rim around its falls as well.
I kept toying with the idea of Beachgirl being the common ancestor? Shrug!

I know irises are very resilient...but I'm just not sure how long it would take for seedlings to get to where you are, from NZ? Confused I've not shipped overseas and while I know I cant bring plants through, due to customs, I'm just not sure about shipping to overseas destinations? Confused

Just minutes ago, I happened to spot this image while searching for bearded irises with 'autumn' in their names...and out of the blue, I just happened to see it. Unfortunately the blogger is not keen on people borrowing his images (despite free all on google image) and I'm not in the mood to entangle myself with a problematic situation.

http://historiciris.blogspot.c...

Its very likely, one of Ron Busch's Seedlings.

The blogger hadn't disclosed whether this 'Busch seedling' have PBF or not Sighing!

So here's my historic findings...mine was sold to me as 'Lavender Mustard in 2012,' it bloomed in 2014. Trader continued selling same noid as Lavender Mustard on an auctioning site online and I began the task of identifying of attempting to identify this noid (a rather modernised iris).
I was nowhere near cracking it when 2015 rolled in and the the season starts up again, I noticed the same trader, renamed her 'Lavender Mustard' to 'Affaire.'
Perplexed as to how she identified it as 'Affaire' it was because so many traders told her so. I provided images to her, denoting the differences between the noid and 'Affaire.' It was enough to convince her to change the labeling to 'Affaire (??)' Grumbling You may as well still refer to it as 'Affaire!' Thumbs down

Wasn't too concern about people believing they think they have the real 'affaire' as I dont think all are fanatical iris collectors...or iris fans. I think the majority of those who bought this noid, would be just ordinary gardeners (but even then, it could still pose a problem in future years to come for someone like myself, attempting to identify it).

And just last week, I've discovered the same noid listed on a NZ commercial iris grower's, as a newly released iris called 'Affaire.' D'Oh! And there's no evidence of 'Affaire' ever being brought into NZ. Rolling my eyes.

What do you guys and gals think? It sure doesnt look like anyone could confirm the presence of PBF on the real 'Affaire'....I'm toying with the idea of going after Barry Blyth for confirmation as a simple yes or no would take out half the challenge...but I dont want to bother him with this Sticking tongue out but to look for people who have Affaires growing in their gardens Whistling

Does your one have PBF...are you able to provide an image of any 'purpling or reddish tinges' found at the base of the foliages for me? Crossing Fingers! Whistling

If your vendor changed the name later on, I get the feeling that she has no real idea what she is selling.

It is sad that you can no longer get New Zealand iris like those from Jean Stevens in your own country. I would think there would be a demand for them in your iris community. I can tell you that I would be heartbroken if I couldn't get the iris from some of the U.S. hybridizers here.
