Who's planting snow peas?
Its time to plant them, this month or next. They get a bad rap, because most think they cant take frost. UNTRUE !!!
They take down to at least 18 % Fahrenheit. Plant nor peas effected. I have ! Get peas around jan, feb.

They must say SNOW PEAS !!! Edible pod peas dont taste the same !!!

Anybody grown them in colder temps ?

Philip, I've never even thought about a fall pea planting. Might give that a whirl this year, all I'd lose is a pack of seeds. I usually try to get my peas in the ground when the frogs wake up - early to mid February. And we've been known to have snow in March. Hmmm.

Go Deb Go ! You might get two crops. Back to back. Early spring and late spring. I'm not positive, but i bet snow wouldn't kill them. Snow dont get colder than 32 f. Whats the coldest temp you've experenced ?

They do well in spring, here, if planted while it is still cool.
Fall planting, here, should have been done in August.

Philip, I have a smallish area just outside my side kitchen door that is currently filled with half dead zinnias (too much heat, too little water while we were gone). I think I'll pull those, refresh the soil a bit, and plant some snow peas with perhaps some pansies or cabbage/kale at their feet. It's against a rock wall and surrounded by sidewalk, so retains heat well. Thanks for the inspiration! I'll post pictures - before and afters.

Nursery or any store that sells seeds or seed catalog. My ace hardware got next years seeds in a few weeks back.
The two vatritys i tried last year were : Taichung TC11 by Ferri Morris, from ace hardware. And Yakumo giant from Sand Hill seeds.
Giants were bigger pods, but as far as poundage, they they were equal.
I think any varieties prouduce about the same. Just be sure they say snow peas on lable, and pick early for stringless peas.
Do not get pea seeds that say : edible pod, my experience with edible pod peas, is, they all have strings, and they don't taste the same as snow peas.

I, too, like snow peas better than either the sugar pod (edible) varieties or shellable peas. I also just got an old timey sprouter from a friend (she dug it out and dusted it off for me) since the grocery stores are still afraid to sell alfalfa sprouts. Sheesh. I really miss sprouts in my sandwiches.

My go-to seed supplier is Territorial Seed, but that is rather geared toward the cooler and wetter Pacific Northwest, with a shorter growing season. Find a supplier that caters to your region is my advice.

Speaking of alfalfa sprouts, i like them to ! So easy to grow. Year round.
Earlier this year, i got a pound of organic alfalfa seeds for eight dollars, from Urban Farmer.
A good price. Isn't it ?
Got some packs of other seeds also, helped out with shipping costs .

Hay now. I'd like to see a pic of that old timey sprouter you got.

Yes, alfalfa sprouts on sandwiches!

I was able to snag both snow peas and a mixed pack of sprouting seeds from the feed store today. Philip, I'll dig up the sprouter and snap a picture. It's nothing special but is probably 20+ years old.

I found some at Sprouts! They are Oregon Sugar Pod II. It says flat-podded, stringless from short, disease-resistant vines. Non-GMO. I have to wait to sow for a while, until soil temp drops below 85 degrees.

Here's my before and after pics. Took out the tired flowers, direct seeded Oregon Sugar Pod II plus some prettiness in front, mulched with black dirt, and watered it all in. This is a very small bed right outside my side porch, faces south so lots of sun.

And... here's my yellowed sprouter. It's called "Biosnacky" - who knows if the company even still exists... But it's clean and functional. I'll likely only do one tray, my husband is not big on sprouts, I'll likely be sharing with the chickens!

You could do lots of sprouts in that sprouter. You ever try radish sprouts. They have a bit of a warm, twang. Lots of different seeds to sprout. Must be one hubby would like. Maybe pea sprouts ?

Dont worry. Y'alls peas will survive the frost just like snow peas.
I grew the same Oregon sugar pod ownce, a long time back, and never again. I kind of recollect?😕??? That, they had strings and didn't have quite the same flavor as snow peas. They were good though.
Maybe they've improved the strings out of them. I just hate stringing peas or beans.
See how y'all like. Then next spring try snow peas, to compare.
