I'll put on my Master Gardener hat here. UV rays cause us to sunburn and they can also cause a plant to sunburn but there are other factors. A plant will burn when the leaves give off more water than they take in. This can be caused by strong wind, chemicals, UV rays, extreme heat and so forth. Plants tend to adapt to their environment so when they are moved and come under different conditions, it takes time for them to adjust. If in shade, they grow shade leaves which usually get fried when quickly moved into the sun. Excess heat will also burn plants which is my concern with this lanai during the summer. If you block the UV with this tarp while also reducing heat with the screen cloth and have the bonus of blocking strong winds, you should be in good shape.

Thanks for the lesson Jim. I had no idea that there were so many factors that contribute to burning!

Were they at least protected by the UV tarp?

Some are burned. I feel like I am abusing them when they are outside for the summer but I see some new growth and they are so ecstatic in fall when it cools down again!! I hardly have anything blooming now. Tonight I looked hard and some are okay, some are not happy, and some are quite happy. Can you tell they come from all over the world and all different conditions? I envy Roger West who only grows Cats. That is smart.....but I'd be very bored!!!

I could imagine the Cyms being parked under a shady tree/shady spot at the beginning of the outdoor season and then by midsummer slowly moved into more and more sun?

Too late but maybe next year! They are fairly burnt already. I clip them at the end of the outside season. The only ones that look really bad are the variegated ones. They need a complete leaf for effect.

My transition was fairly painless...amazingly enough..I rigged a white sheet over the plants ( Cats mostly )for a few days and now they are as happy as can be.
The Phals on the other hand, have been staying on the porch/ sunroom with the windows open and I've lost quite a few of them this hot summer..it's almost
like they are baking, the leaves just quickly get mushy/watery and fall off.

Too bad you can't eat them once they bake. Only kidding. Crying I know it's tough to lose plants. Here, a few flowers fell off yesterday inside when it got in the 90s, but the leaves look okay.

My transition has been anything but painless. I just got word that the new roof pannels are on a semi heading this way from Wisconsin. It looks like nest week may bring some activity. I sure hope so.

I just found this post and find it most interesting. I think it's a fabulous idea. If my hubby and I were younger, I would love to do the same. I originally had over 150+ orchids, but due to circumstances beyond my control, (emergency trips up north during past two winters) I lost most of my orchids and hoya plants. I'm now down to about 20 cats, 3 phals, one paphiopedilum, and one cymbidium. I lost all my vanda, and dendrobiums. I also lost all of my large leaf hoya. I was totally devastated. I'm slowing trying to replace a few of my favorites, but being on a limited income, it's difficult.
I can't wait to see the finished project. I know sit will be just georgeous.!!!
