I'm just nutz about Den. unicum and now is its bloom season. I asked if they had any in spike or bloom and got a nod. These make such incredible specimen plants. Hope I can do it justice. The Stelis was at the very top of the list. I've never grown them, or seen them in person, but loved them all when I saw them on Andy's site.

They are so very simple, aren't they? Easy to get distracted with other, more exotic, blooms. Their fused sepals and petals make them look un-orchidlike. Appealing to me in this instance. I'll keep you posted. There were a bunch I loved. It was a difficult decision.

My Pecteilis radiata which I had ordered last Fall from von Bourgondien, arrived yesterday. They are tiny corms, hardly larger than a pea.
I think I will stick them into the Bog/into live Moss and see if they sprout. It seems the problem will be keeping them dry in Winter. They are supposed to be hardy to zone 5 with some mulch. But the wetness might do them in, so lifting them in Fall and storing them dry and cold somewhere else might be a good idea.
Wish me luck!

Sounds like a plan. I use the refrigerator for my pleione in winter. And recently took them out into an unheated space with some light. Of course I have yet to get them to bloom but they are alive! (They bloom in fall.) When is blooming season for the Pecteilis radiata. And a link so others can see the blooms. http://bit.ly/a6OOhy

Just bought my first orchid on Tues. I think it's a phaleaenopsis. Came from Walmart with no name on the tag. The directions say to water once a week with 3 ice cubes. Any idea of why use ice?

Also ordered one from an eBay seller today: Odontocidium Catatante 'Pumpkin Patch'. Love the color.

You all have some stunning blooms.

Susan

Oh yes, Mrs. Eagle-eye spotted the correct match!! You are good! Smiling
What can I say, so many vendors, so many beautiful and interesting Orchids. But then, in my defense I have to say, Klaus picked some too! He spotted his favorites quite nicely!
We had fun.
I will post more details on those, right now I am processing the pics from the show.

Kathy, after hitting Andy's booth 3 times at the San Diego show, I found out that he has a lot that isn't listed on his website,. The Nageliella purpurea that I bought at the show, for instance. Good thing he puts requirements on the tags! I was looking for Brassavola cuculata, and was told by one of his employees "oh, we have those in the greenhouse". They are all very easy to talk to, so call and ask if you are looking for something specific.
By the way Ursula, I was told this orchid is a hummingbird magnet...can they get into your cage?

I like that too about Andy's labels - they are the best, giving you the proper growing conditions right there for starters.
Hummingbirds? Yes, the mesh lets smaller birds fly right through. ( And there is another reason not to pot up anything in Sphagnum, it seems to be excellent nesting material.... Glare )
We get Hummingbirds in a warmer Summer around here, have to look for that.

A very formidable list, Ursula. Should keep me busy looking up new names. Did you and Carol leave any orchids at Andy's? They're supposed to ship mine this week. Hurray!

Laurel, Not to worry! Andy's has stuff he won't even show on his website and he is still doing the show circut. I didn't know he would be on the East coast at the same time he was in San Diego. I don't know how many employees he has, but I wouldn't mind working for him...one of the guys told me he was working for plants for the show weekend.
who needs cash when you can work for orchids? Hilarious!
