I will be clerking at the Amherst show on Friday and will have to interpret "orchid" which is unfortunately not my first language. I guess I should say Latin is not my first language. Where is my grandpa S, the Latin teacher, when I need him. Although I bet everyone's pronunciation has probably changed since the 1950s since there haven't been any native speakers around for millennia!

Spoken American-English Latin is so different from Latin Latin, it won't matter. A language like Latin/ pronunciation has always been subject to the country where it is used. You will be in good company! Smiling

What is the Amherst show, is that an Orchid show?
Take lots of photos for us!

I'm excited, I found a show that isn't too far away-
North Carolina Arboretum (I think it's in Asheville)
WNC Orchid Society, March 26 -27: This annual American Orchid Society judged show that also features orchid plants and supplies for sale by world class vendors. Educational classes will be offered throughout the weekend, and WNC Orchid Society members will be available to answer questions and provide orchid-growing advice.

It's hard to wait until the end of March, though!

My husband promised to take me back to the Biltmore Estate in the spring when the gardens would be in bloom.
I wonder if I could convince him that the height of spring would be...March 26th and 27th? Whistling

Amherst Orchid Society (which I recently joined) meets in South Amherst, MA. Their annual show is this Saturday. Better charge those camera batteries.
Susan that is great news!! You will love going to a show!
Oh, could you announce it here? http://cubits.org/orchids/thre...

A little hint, IF you know you're going to a show.
1. Check the show's website to see which vendors will be there.
2. Check those vendors websites to verify they will be there and make a "want" list.
3. Call to see if they will bring your order to the show (most will),
this will save you shipping costs, and assure that they bring that special one to the show.

I'll bet Ursula has several Ca. growers on speed dial.

Great ideas, Carol.
I looked at vendors but never thought about a pre-order.

Lindsey, I think there is one in Raleigh but I didn't really check it out as that's too far away.

Sorry, Kathy, as I was typing it, I figured there was probably a better place to comment on it.
I have been to a show, it was at the Chicago Botanical Garden and was very impressive. That's where I got my Andy's Orchids- the Dichaea and also bought some Draculas.

I tip my hat to you. That's how I came by my brassavola cuculatta from Andy's. I had looked for it at several shows, to no avail, but asked one of Andy's people and was told they thought there were a few in the greenhouse, so shortly before the next show, I made a call....

Some vendors(Oak Hill Gardens is one, I think) will also give a discount if you pre-order for pick up at a show.

J & L too.
I was mad at the NHOS show because there was no vendor list. Grumbling I looked everywhere.
So I told each vendor to tell the NHOS that a customer wanted a list for next year!

It's much better to call the vendors before the show. I always have a shopping list and the vendors only bring what is in bloom so I strike out. If I tell them what I'm looking for in advance, they can bring it bloom or not. It works out well for me.
