Well, rest assured it doesn't affect how pretty the orchid is or how much we all enjoy seeing it.

btw, when are you going to get rid of those big albino spiders in the middle of the flowers?? Big Grin

(just messin with ya - as are the darned micro-botanists)

Everyone knows it as Epi ciliare. I try to use what folks will understand! Let the botanists do as they will.....

I agree If they re-classified it in 2004 and Jim still got one with the old name 8yr. later, I'd venture to guess most people agree on keeping the old name.

I went to the Tampa Orchid Club meeting today and came home with two new babies. The first is Bulbophyllum flabellum-veneris: http://www.orchidsonline.com.a...

The second is Restrepia striata 'Jumbo': http://forums.gardenweb.com/fo...

They are just small plants but I hope I can grow them.

Did you ever hear of the Restrepia before? It is new to me. I bought it because of the weird and different factor.

I have some Restrepias, but not this particular one. I grow them somewhat shady and don't let them dry out.

Those are both pretty weird and wonderful, Jim. Especially like the bulbo, can't wait until you get it blooming!

I've still not taken the plunge and joined my local orchid club. Afraid I'll come home with new orchids every time I go to a meeting, too.

I'm back from the Tampa Orchid Club meeting and two new babies followed me home, both in bloom. The first is Wilsonara Pacific Perspective 'Pacific Heat'.

I agree, Bree. I don't get much of a smell either. From what I've read, Ursula is right in expecting one. Shrug!

The name sure does imply that it has a fragrance, doesn't it. Maybe it has a certain time of day when the scent is released?

My white Begonia Odorata Alba is only fragrant in the morning, and of course the Brugmansias and Brassavolas let go their scent at night. I also had roses when I lived in Utah that became more scented as the day warmed up.

My local Lowe's had a big rack of orchids on sale. Most were those ugly dyed phals, but I did find a couple that look still healthy and are blooming. Big one was $5 and the little one $3.75.

Well, I didn't actually buy this, it came to me in trade with a friend who has 11 acres and keeps horses up north of Orlando.

It is a native quite common in the southeastern states, Epi.Magnoliae commonly known as the "Green-fly orchid". Flowers are tiny, about 3/4in across at most, and the leaves are about 2in. long. They are on hunks of bark growing with resurrection ferns, and my friend found them on a fallen branch on her property. The flowers are greenish white and fragrant at night. (and a little squished from mailing)

Yes, thanks Ursula. There is a synonym, too Epi. conopseum which is what my book had it as when I looked up "Green-fly orchid". It's also known as "Bartram's Tree orchid".

I have this great, old (1972) book given to me by my pool guy "The Native Orchids of Florida" and for these true native species it is a gold mine with a full page of color plates for each. Although obviously some of the names are out of date, the naming of orchids being as ever-changing as it is. Nice to be able to take a book to bed, and fall asleep reading stuff about orchids.
