Thanks, It is a large flower for a Bllra. and it has a floofy lip. These and Miltassias do very well for me.

Here is a list of the loot from the Apopka trip yesterday:

Enc. cordigera 'Chocolate Violets' x Epi. atronecium 'Mother's Day' . From Chapman's, a nice blooming size plant.

Tetratonia 'Dark Prince' this nice plant is in bloom and was a gift from Laurel. (Broughtonia sanguinea X Tetramiera canaliculata)

Two small cuttings that I have already potted. The first is Den keithii and the second is Coelogyne ovalis.

Degarmoara Flying High in spike:

Lc. Netrasiri Doll in bloom. For $10 it was just too cute to pass up.
Thumb of 2012-11-08/hawkarica/df4da2 Thumb of 2012-11-08/hawkarica/dbeb4c

There was no ID on this one but I liked it and got it anyway. If you recognize it, give me a shout. I'm gussing a Miltassia but could be another Degarmoara.

Blc Lime Cooler 'Krull-Smith' HCC/AOS A nice sized plant but not in bloom. It has a yellow flower with a thin red stripe in the center of the lip. Striking bloom.

Two huge Vandas, V. Ogden Phipps and V. Wirat Gordon X Asc. Varut Fuchsia.

Aranda. Jairak Heartthrob. Large plant but not in bloom. My first Aranda which is an intergeneric hybred Arachnis X Vanda.

Other than that, I picked up a Vanda Sansai Blue for a Extension Agent.

Got my new 'chids from Selby Gardens yearly plant give-away today. Went for the gusto and took Psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos' and Trigonidium egertonianum as they were big, healthy plants that look to be close to blooming size, although no spikes evident. The Catts they were offering were really tiny, so this seemed like a good bet for me. Psychopsis has one leaf that is nearly 9in. long! Leaves on the Trig are almost 2ft. Big Grin

Anybody think I should be re-potting into clay pots, maybe? I hate those plastic pots.

Very nice choices, Elaine. The P. Mendenhall Hildos has attractive foliage and is showy even when not in bloom. The Trigonidum is a species with a very cute flower. It is related to the Maxillaria. Congrats!
Yes, shoot for clay pots.

I agree
But I would try not to disturb the roots on the Psychopsis, they are notorious for sulking when disturbed. Tread lightly... Smiling

Ahh, a psulky Psychopsis, huh? Well, I'd just as soon switch it's pot now, and let it sulk in its new one through the cold weather. I'll make it a quick, sneaky switcheroo. Then perhaps it will have recovered it's happy nature by spring.

Oh, gee. I guess I get to go to Lowe's to buy new clay pots . . .. sure hope they don't have any tempting orchids on the clearance rack. I am having serious deprivation issues since I missed the Apopka trip.

New rescues from Death Row at Lowe's - one even has a tag Blc. Volcano Delicious 'Volcano Apricot' which sounds like it might be a color I would love. Its sister has half a tag, but one flower hanging on. It says Parade 'Volcano Queen' and the tag is broken off in front of the word Parade. Anyone?

Third is a huge lusty looking Phal with roots reaching up from its deathbed of sphagnum, lots of healthy roots and good looking leaves. We shall see! For under $4 each I'm willing to take a chance on them. Breaking out the chopsticks for a good old session of moss-picking and re-potting.

Excellent, you nailed it on the first try, Jim. Thank you.

Psychopsis is in a new clay pot already, with hardly a quiver of its sulky little roots, too. I'm making holes in another pot for the Trigonidium. Diamond wheel on the Dremel tool seems to cut through the clay very nicely. Having lots of fun making different shaped holes, diamonds, triangles etc.

Repotting the big ol' Phal, I think they were going for the record "how much sphag can we cram into this pot??". So far a bushel and a half once it's fluffed out. Good news is there were hardly any brown roots in there, so that bodes well for the plant's survival, I think. Big fat white ones coming out the bottom and lots of shiny green ones out the top.

Thanks for the tip on the diamond wheel! Never thought of it and need some larger orchid pots than can be found around here.

As mentioned in the snake story, I went on a field trip to Sarasota this past Monday and accomplished quite a bit. I first stopped at the Earth Box place to see and pick up some starter kits which include the cover, fertilizer and dolomite. I've been stopping in at that place for years. Earth boxes are great. Then I went to Plantio La Orquidea to check on Kathy's David Sander. I found a nice one for her and then couldn't help shopping a bit for myself. The first one to grab onto me was Blc. Phu Lin X B. cucullata which was hybridized by this grower but has yet to be registered. The color and form just blew me away.

The second one that jumped out at me was a Brassavola species called B. glauca but now called Rhyncholaelia glauca. I love the light greenish yellow flower.

Last but not least is Stanhopea nigroviolacea X Stanhopea grandiflora. Mine, shown here, is not in bloom but I'm hoping it knocks my socks off.

Jim, those are really good choices. I have the Rhyncholaelia glauca also and iI would think it should do really well in your sunny environment.

very very nice! Thumbs up

Thanks, Ursula. I spotted that blooming Blc. Phu Lin X B. cucullata from across the room and ran to it. I think the colors are incredible and to think it is not even registered yet. I was really after the species Stanhopea nigroviolacea but I'm having trouble finding it so settled for this cross. It is a nice plant so I hope I can bloom her.
