Mj says they grow on the tops of big horizontal branches on the live oaks, Jim. Look for the little resurrection ferns along the up sides of branches, and that's where the little orchids will be, too. Might have to go for a hike in the wilderness, but they're supposed to bloom through October at least. That being said, I have lots of the ferns on my oaks, but no orchids - until now!

Just got home from a little orchid shopping at the Tropiflora Festival. I think I have scored some wonderful bargains! (hey, it's my Scots heritage on the bargain hunting thing)
Brassia caudata, left, Blc.Richard Mueller, center and Brs.David Sander on the right (it's either a Brassavola, or a Rhynchovola depending whom you talk to). I know it's crass to brag about the prices, but one was $12 and the other two were $10 each. Nice big healthy plants, and the David Sander has a little sheath showing potential.

Elaine, you did very good! And you even scored a David Sander, the best of the best. Tomorrow is the West Coast Orchid show and Sale in Largo, next week is the USF Botanical Garden show and sale and in two weeks is the Tampa Orchid Culb show and sale. It's like winning the trifecta.

Yikes, Jim I can see your shopping shoes flaring up from here! Can't wait to see what you get.
I do love those shows, and got lots of great things at the couple I went to last winter, but there sure are not any bargains to be had at the shows. The growers bring all their best stuff, in bloom, and charge accordingly.
Yes, I'm excited to get another David Sander, although the one I have hasn't seen fit to bloom yet. Just couldn't pass it up at that price.

I went off this morning to the Florida West Coast orchid show and sale with buying shoes and fire retardant socks in place. Several hours later I staggard home with 14 new babies in tow. The inventory is as follows:
Onc. (Psychopsis) Mendenhall 'Hildos' FCC/AOS. This is the one with the spotted leaves.
Name: Carol Santa Ana, ca Sunset zone 22, USDA zone 10 A.
Love that Enc. ciliare! They seem to be throwing a lot of the Epis into the Enc. catagory lately, and visa versa. I suppose there isn't a chance they'll sort it out in our lifetime. Don't these people know how easily confused us seniors are?

No kidding. I think it is their goal in life to keep orchid names as mysterious and confusing as they possibly can. Otherwise, they wouldn't maintain their importance in the grand scheme.
Whoever "they" are . . .
Fantastic additions to your collection, there Jim. Careful, you may need to add on to the OC if you keep going at this pace!

I just ordered the Habenaria medusa (they came down a bit on the price) and the Encyclia brassavolae from Andy's. I asked about the Gongora horichiana and they have none for sale now but should have in another 6 months or so.

Just arrived from Andy's, that's Enc. brassavolae on the right and the little guy is Habenaria medusa. I paid a hefty price, even with the discount for the Habnaria ($65). I hope it does well.

I went looking, and found a Habenaria medusae at Little Brook Orchids in Lancaster, PA. Even at their price I wouldn't buy it for myself (darned Scots ancestry) but it's a good candidate for me to put on the wish list for my kids as a holiday gift. Got burned last year when they ordered Phaius from Logee's for me, so I don't want to waste their money again, either.
I wondered if anyone on this forum might have bought from Little Brook before?

I'm back from the Tampa Orchid Club's Expo at the USF Botanical Gardens and my shoes are cooling in the pool. I love that sizzle sound when they hit the water.
First to land in my cart was Aliceara Sunday's Best X Oda. bictoniense.
Then there was this nice Bllra. Pacific Treasures 'Everything Nice'
Then three smaller plants: Gongora bufonia X self, Gongora escobariana, and Stanhopea connata 'Arnie' X self'.
Last but certainly not least is this huge Vanda Boonchoo X Vanda Thonglor Sand with two spikes. This may be my largest Vanda and I have some big ones.
