I think this information should be added to the primary section, but it should not replace the information in the rose-specific section. In that section, bloom size is part of a cluster of information along with bloom shape and petal count. It would be odd to provide data on two of those up at the top and one of those down at the bottom, so bloom size should still be in the custom section.

Thanks for the nudge. Smiling I don't want things to fall through the cracks: could someone summarize for me the exact proposal that we want done here? And then I'll make it happen.

My take on thread:

Additions to General Info Area

Flower Form checkbox:
-Single
-Spikes/Racemes
-Cluster
-Umbrel
-Spath
-Plume

Total Bloom Size checkbox:
-<1 "
- 1"-2"
- 2"-3"
- 3"-5"
- 5"-7"
- 7"-12"
- 12"-18"
->18"
Above sizes just throw-away - no reason for them, so if other size ranges make more sense that's great.

Custom dbs which already have bloom size listed will retain that info in their special fields.

The custom db size will also be added to the general info area by Dave who automagically will add existing data to the new field. Right, Dave?

One issue is whether "The Rose People" want everything listed as flower form single, or as clusters if floribundas.

Thanks, Monica. That is much more than I had thought of when I originally made the request. But I can see that those categories would be very useful for search purposes!

I don't really think any information of this type from the custom rose DB can or should be added to the general section. For one thing, the size ranges for rose blooms are completely different (under 2"; 2-3"; 4-5"; 6" or over). For another, the flower form information would just add unnecessary confusion. The term "single" in the rose world means "fewer than 8 petals." The bloom size, shape, petal count, and clustering or non-clustering data are already in the custom section of the info form and don't really have to be repeated in the general section. Only some types of data do have to be repeated (hardiness zones, bloom colors, bush height, etc.) and they already are repeated.

Besides, people know what a rose looks like and they know the approximately size of a rose. As I understood it from Woofie's original request, this information will be useful to people who don't know anything about the bloom. If, for instance, I want to avoid plants with spikes of blooms, I'll appreciate the "warning."

My impression was that the database was intended to provide information. On ALL types of plants.

I certainly can, but I'm not going to do it until the moderator of any custom DB asks me to do it for their plants.

So where would something like a daylily that is registered as a 7" bloom be listed? In the 5"-7" or the 7"-12" size? Right now I am thinking to leave things as is on the daylily database. Shrug!

To extend Evan's thought a bit, if there is going to be a category for "Flower Form", it would perhaps be more accurate to divide it into "Flower Type" and "Inflorescence Type" categories or something along those lines.

Flower Type is typically pretty simply divided into:
Single
Compound

There are quite a few inflorescence types:
Raceme
Spike
Thyse
Panicle
Umbel
Compound Umbel
Corymb
Cyme
Spathe

Plus probably a handful of others I forgot.

I agree with Sue that there's something wrong with the new bloom sizes. The numbers shouldn't be repeated. The present options probably should be replaced with the following:

Under 1"
1-2"
3-4"
5-6"
7-12"
13-18"
over 18"

And the last two options sound suspect anyway: Are there that many blooms that are that size? Maybe it would be best to follow 7-12" with over 12" and call it a day.
