I think u give too much fertilizer jonna,
It looks like my past lotus, their leaves burnt n become yellow so fast.
Give it every 14 days minimum with the right portion (depends on your container)
About the water level its fine already

Your ponds are nice with the waterlilies and guppies ...
I loves guppies Lovey dubby
Hopes your lovely lotus get well soon Thumbs up

Thank you Hendrik, I will back off on the fertilizer and keep the water up a little and hope they start putting out aerial leaves. The fertilizer I use are these sticks for houseplants, I had put 3 at a time in each pot. That is a lot, someone had told me they were heavy feeders but that is probably excessive.

I have a lot of guppies, that is for sure! I originally put some of the long tailed 'fancy' guppies in there but they have bred a lot and the color does not come through as strong in later generations. I also have quite a few Mollies in there, one large blue cichlid that I am hoping will keep the guppy population down and a pair of Rosie Barbs that I also thought would keep down the guppies. The barbs have just joined the breeding frenzy and now there are 3 of them. I only put one cichlid in so that they won't over populate as well. It would probably help if I didn't feed them but I have a couple of favorite Mollies in there and I enjoy feeding them. One of the Mollies comes right up when I stand over the pond and I hand her food. Her name is Big Mim and I swear she knows her name.

My lotus woke up again when their water warmed up and I have one aerial leaf and a lot of floating leaves. I tried changing the water levels as suggested, that might have had something to do with their waking up as well. Our rainy season has started now so the pond goes up during the rain and I lower it in the mornings. I haven't fertilized them at all but now I think I will since they are growing.

Well, let's hope it isn't too hot for them here as well. It is well over 88f every day here, and the humidity is in the 80's and 90% range. It's hot. I change about 1/3 of the water every few days in that pond because it sits in full sun on the roof and the water gets too warm for the fish. Luckily my cisterna is under the garage so the water there stays cool and that is what supplies the hose on the roof.

I gave them some fertilizer yesterday, I see 2 more aerial leaves coming up so I do hope it blooms. If it takes too long though I will have to uproot it. I'm putting a new floor on the roof garden and will be either lowering the water level a lot or perhaps removing everything to temporary containers until they are finished. That starts in July, we'll see if the lotus can bloom before then.

My paltry water lilies are at least catching on and have some small red lily pads. The water lettuce and water poppies are also grabbing hold and are actually growing. I have the last two in baskets planted in pea gravel with the 9 day fertilizer spikes; they have wires to keep the rims just above water level. They should really take off soon. If I can get four or five water lilies I am pleased. I didn't order new ones this year, just took the old ones from the bottom of the pond (I clean the roots and put them in fresh gravel then sink to the bottom 3.5' and they survive under the ice all winter. Water runs about 32+ down there.

Amazing Mary, that they live and bloom in such diverse climates, from yours to mine. I would think that they would love the long days of summer, lots of light should hurry the blooming. There is not much difference in length of day here but the water does get warmer.

Lily pads are slowly spreading and quite small. The water poppy has finally perked up and is doing well. Wish I had bought more. Water celery is slow this year. A year or so ago it had covered half the pond. I ended up cutting it back. I planted some Empress of India nasturtiums very near the west side hoping it will grow, cover a short width of stone sitting on top of the pond wall, then drape toward the water. They are a lovely deep red (or perhaps a very very deep dark orange. Hard to tell. Dark foliage at any rate for nice contrast.

With the sun (when it isn't overcast which it has been fairly constantly the last two weeks) I am back to fighting algae but the organic barley, Algaway and an organic pond sludge reducer are doing a good job keeping up. That and cleaning skimmer filter, bio well, and using the skimming net keep the water fairly free of it. Water is crystal clear.

Algae, the bane of ponders all over the world. I have found, however, that the string algae keeps the water crystal clear. I try and keep it under control, pulling it out by the handful when it gets too pushy, but I don't want it all to go as then I think other types of algae appear - like the one that makes the water green and cloudy. I use a plastic rake to get it off the floor of the pond and to grab floating gobs of it. When the rocks that the water runs over get too much algae, I turn off the pump for an hour and pour hydrogen peroxide on them. It works well and dilutes in the water and is ok for the fish. It also helps keep all algae down, maybe you can try some.

Yes, the falls (three short tiers) get really awful and HP would be much less expensive than what I am using. I had string algae a year ago and before but none this year. Thank heavens. It gets wrapped around the lily pad stems and short of climbing in with scissors I don't know how to get it out. Actually same with the other algae.

Holly - I am so glad you said that about your first waterlily of the year. Ours are so late to flower this year as well. I thought perhaps we had done something or perhaps had too much shade this year. Seems things are still playing catch up from the brutal winter we had.

Oh... No flowers yet...maybe some day". I feed with lily tabs ... And hope someday they will build up enough zip to put some flowers out...
I need a small inline filter ...external.. So I can run my pump and get clear water... And be able to see the koi and goldfish"... Any recommendations as to a small unit... The pond might be25-30 gallons at most

For a temporary filter to clear the water I generally just put some cotton or nylon batting in a basket and set it or hang it under the outlet. It works quickly and you can wash the batting as often as needed. The nylon works better than real cotton as it holds up longer.

Oh Jonna.. great idea...I'll just clean the water ... running the water through to drip back... and worry about a decorative soluition after ... I guess I could use the drip through as needed and then store it till it needs it again... OK... got the collender filled with an assortment of nylon mesh items... up to activate the pump... thanks
