I would expect a Michigan shmoo to be leaner than a Dogpatch shmoo.

Do you have a heated "house" for your poultry in the winter?

LOL...you guys!

Andi...heat? No way!
Who could afford that besides any farm critters can withstand
severe weather if they have enough feed, water and shelter.

Oh, they're all grown up! Great pictures. What do you call the "curly" feathers on the geese?

Curly Hilarious!

They sure grow fast don't they?
Geese are as big as their parents by 8 weeks old but still
have to grow out their feathers.
The Runner Ducks are about 8 weeks old right now
and going though a baby molt so they look a little rough.

I was gonna say that they're getting their flight feathers (first molt from baby down to real feathers). Isn't it amazing how fast they can grow? I just ordered leg bands for my baby canaries.. I've already got 2 brand new nests for the 2010 fall season (extremely early). Do you collect the feathers for pillows/comforters/etc? When I lived in NY, the amish raised geese for food, eggs, and the feathers.. it take a LOT of feathers for pillows, let alone a comforter!!

Nope, don't collect the feathers but when they molt (this time of year)
it looks like somebody had a pillow fight out there with feathers all over!

I'm really enjoying these duck photo's and stories. Every now and then a mallard appears in my garden from a lagoon about a mile away.
Now for a really dumb question: (I don't know a thing about ducks...obviously...) Do they make a mess when they do their business in the garden ??? Inquiring minds wanna know.

I dunno about ducks, but I know that the Canadian Geese here are the bane at the golf courses and most areas in the Denver metro. Personally, I hate 'em.. they're mean, they hiss and will attack you, they're not scared of humans or traffic (they WILL walk into the middle of a busy road, and I mean a road that gets up to 150,000 cars a day on it) and stop traffic for about 3-5 minutes while they waddle across, there was actually a family who knew what the traffic lights meant and would cross on the red w/people, and they poo EVERYWHERE. And I mean EVERYWHERE. In fact, some reservoirs here have to be drained and dredged every year or so because of the amount of goose poo that gets dropped into it.. and that raises the ammonia levels and drops the pH so that it's not safe for fish. At some of the more prestigious golf courses, they hire people to shoot the geese because using dogs doesn't work any more.. the dogs are trained to bark & run and the geese just ignore them after a while. But I've heard that goose poo can make good fertilizer. I expect that CRs geese aren't mean like wild ones.. they look more like puppydogs than the meanies around here.

My waterfowl are fenced off from my house and yard area.
We have 5 acres and plenty of room so the poo doesn't get concentrated in one area like if you had too many in a small place, plus waterfowl poo easily gets washed away by a good rain or blast from the hose.
I actually like waterfowl better than chickens now because chickens scratch around the base of plants and scatch mulch and wood chips out of flower beds.
Waterfowl just wiggle their beaks around and are far less destructive
