I have a few questions/comments about this database.

#1
I noticed that there are entries for "mixes" in the database. For example: Dreams Wildrose Mix. Do "mixes" belong in the database? This specific mix is really Dreams Burgundy, Dreams Appleblossom and Dreams Neon Rose. (This would also be the case with other annuals such as marigold and common mixes like Bolero Mix). Basically these mixes are specific varieties sold/grown together in a multi pack.

#2
Many petunias are propagated by cuttings (vegetative), such as Supertunias and Black Velvet. Should there be a data box that state propagation by seed vs. vegetative?

#3
There isn't a official category list for petunias. I have found that many suppliers of seed and/or plants do use some of these:
Category - Flower Size
Grandiflora XL 3.5" to 4.5"
Floribunda L 3" to 3.5"
Multiflora M 2" to 3"
Milliflora S 1.5" to 2"

#4
Another important plant characteristic that should be noted: Growth Habit (of the plant)
Again, no official guide, but many are described as:
Upright
Mounding
Mounding/Upright
Round
Mounding/Spreading
Trailing/Spreading

*All important for choosing the petunia for the planting location and desired look

#5
Most new hybrids are continuous and/or free-flowering. No deadheading required to initiate new bud formation. Some require deadheading, some don't. Is this something that should be noted on the plant data file?

#6
A data box for double bloom vs. single bloom

The petunia industry has changed so much in recent years. It's amazing the varieties that are available now-a-days. It was in 1995 that the first Waves were introduced.

I would love to see this sort of information in the database for petunias! And I am wondering if the "x hybrida" I see in a lot of the names actually belongs there. I wanted to add the Hulahoop series to the database, but I can't figure out the correct name!

I have found that the " x hybrida " is on the petunias that are propagated by cuttings (vegetative). Most of the seed varieties will have Grandiflora Hybrid or Floribunda Hybrid or Multiflora Hybrid or Milliflora Hybrid. Maybe google will help.

Thanks, Joanne! You know, I came across that website when I was looking before, but I guess I didn't read it carefully enough!

Oh, rats! I forgot to include the color when I added the Hulahoops just now. Meant to enter Hulahoop Blue, so I could enter the other colors, too. Darn it.

Thanks,

I will hold off with adding any new ones.

One more question: Should we be utilizing the "Series" field when you go to edit the data? Would you call all the Waves, be Easywave, Shockwave, Tidalwave and Wave all "Wave Series"?
In the case of Supertunia Vista Bubblegum and Fucshia, would the series be "Supertunia" or would "Vista" be the series? From what I've seen, there are a small number of groups with different colours in the Supertunias like Vista, but the majority of Supertunias are one variety, like Bordeaux or Picasso

Dave,

You had reference the Proven Winners website as having the Patent info. I just noticed that Supertunia Bordeaux has a different patent name

Patent Information:
Supertunia® Bordeaux™ Petunia hybrid 'Lanbor' PP: 16144 Can. Can.: 2532

My opinion is that the Series field is there as a convenience for us to use as we see fit. So, yes, I think using that field for these series would be a great idea. Then one can easily "Search by characteristic" and see all the plants in the Wave Series, for example.

Joannabanana said:I just noticed that Supertunia Bordeaux has a different patent name

Patent Information:
Supertunia® Bordeaux™ Petunia hybrid 'Lanbor' PP: 16144 Can. Can.: 2532

In this case, the tradename is Bordeaux™, the series name is Supertunia® and the cultivar name is Lanbor.

Alternatively, the tradename is Supertunia® Bordeaux™ with no series name.

(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Lastly, since you are interested in this kind of plant, would you like to be made moderator over Petunias?

It won't be such a big chore, Joanne. It just means that all petunia photos, databox info proposals and miscellaneous proposals will have to be approved by you. Your own petunia photos and proposals will not require anyone else's approval. If and when you have the time, you can clean up that section of the database by removing duplicate entries, editing comments, etc. The work moves quickly when you don't have to wait for various steps in the process to be approved by someone else before you move on.
