Which petunias are you growing this year? For some strange reason, I only have one type on hand to sow this year. Double Cascade Orchid Mist. That's either a sign of amazing (shopping) restraint, or a mystifying oversight...one or the other. At the moment, I can't decide which.

It's getting to be close to time to sow these, isn't it?

Ack! These last few weeks of waiting are so difficult! Hilarious! I guess I should go shovel some manure in the meantime; the physical exhaustion would likely take the edge off of my impatience.

This is the hardest part of winter. Our snow is melting slowly and yesterdays rain helped. More snow over the weekend and for what its worth. The sun feels warmer to me.

I have only WS'ed with open ended jugs.I sow annual poppies that way.Birds and heavy rains were taking my seeds out.
I use 2 plant stakes to anchor the jugs down.I use half gallon because thats all I have.

Poppies Sown November 4 note crossed plant stakes thru the top
Thumb of 2013-02-17/ge1836/379833

Mixed poppies in a gallon, note the crossed plant stakes. If you only use one stake the jug will twirrlaround it in the wind and the seeds will end up scattered.

Tamra,I just stick the support in the top of the jug and slant it as I put it into the ground.I slant the second support in the opposite direction so they cross in the middle of the jug.

Needless to say when using a half gallon it doesnt leave a large area for seeds. The poppies seem to spread over years so hey only need a small starter area. Sow lightly, then thin in spring when they are 4 inches high.

There is a forum on the other website that deals with Winter Sowing.

I really appreciated your tip about using crossed plant stakes to hold your plastic cloches in place. Thumbs up I'd often wondered how this could be done.

Thanks for sharing!

Perhaps we should start a thread on the subject of cloches.

I know I saw the original post on DG.with the jugs and crossed supports.
I have done this method for 2 years and it has worked so well I will order white poppies again and see if I can get them to grow.

I bought these 4 years ago, they didnt germinate and I was ticked off because I bought tons for big bucks.I wanted to see swaths of white poppies with my Japanese Iris.
I think birds got the seeds.
Plus rain
I will try one more time with the jug arrangement.

I went outside and checked my daffs. Sure is cold outside today even though the sun was shinning. I saw one bloom open but laying down flat on the ground because of the snow we had last weekend. But still, it is my first flower of 2013. So I officially record Feb 18 as my first daffodil bloom of the year.

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I lost another 5 pounds on my weight loss program and today I weighed in at 135. Down 15 pounds from my starting weight of 150. I am halfway to my goal of 120 and the 30 pounds total weight that I need to take off and keep off forever for healthy living.

Of course I have broken down that 30 pound goal into smaller steps so that I can have results to celebrate. And then when I do get off some weight I have to share and let everyone know because I am so pleased with myself ha-ha.

I really want to be in much better shape this spring as gardening season rolls around. Thumbs up

Joanne I have never seen that poppy place--interesting, but I don't think that I will work with them. I still have a packet of California poppies which I have not sown.
