This is most likely the last year buying these collections for increase and resale. Last year was suppose to be the last time but this Regional thing came up for May 2013 so I extended our buying for a year. I have found that my, or most peoples seedlings sell better than 90% of the registered plants, and I don't have to buy my seedlings. The most important reason, I want to slow down some, I realize that I can't do the things I once did without struggling and taking twice as long. I like messing with these daylilies and want to downsize before they become a burden and not fun any longer.

James says he's going to do the same thing in a couple of years, quit buying all those collections to resell. He says he's just going to use his seedlings and then buy only what he will use.
Kim and I keep hearing he has big things planned for us (he hasn't said this to us, just other people) and I keep telling them "yea he has MORE work planned for us nodding

I have bought 2 whole collections this year and I'm still waiting to see what a few others are coming out with. Then I have gotten a few here and there that I want to use; most will just be used for making seed to sell.

I really want to make several crosses using a couple of my seedlings pictured below. Possibly with Polston's or Gossards toothy daylilies. I've been doing some shopping on the LA trying to find a good parent to match up with these. I barely did any pollinating this past summer because of the extreme heat and drought. Can't wait for next year!

Fred, are you talking about your "registered" seedlings that sell better, or
are you talking about them plus unregistered ones? Appreciate you sharing your
wisdom and experience.
Thanks for that. I really get it about slowing down. I want it to stay fun too, and
crossing the flowers is my all time favorite thing to do, but it's work for sure to
maintain these plants simply to get to cross them.

Michele, that is interesting that James wants to do the same thing. He probably does
have plans for you and Kim to do some more work. LOL. Seedlings take a lot of work.
It is so nice of you both to share what you have learned. I'm so grateful for that. It
certainly helps when I'm mostly learning from trial and error.

Sandy, your toothy seedlings are gorgeous. Have you considered crossing them with
Hip Hop Music? In my humble opinion, I think HHM would go great with both of those.
I can see a lot more teeth pairing those together. I kinda envy you guys working on the
toothy ones.

I am talking about unregistered seedling, when you registered a seedling it becomes a registered daylily. All daylilies are seedlings until they are registered with the AHS no matter how old they are.

Great seedlings Anja and Sandy. Both have some nice things to work with.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! These two seedlings were first year blooms and I was thrilled with them because they are tall and have multi branching. Thanks MIsty for the suggestion of Hip Hop Music....I looked that one up on the LA and had actualy considered it awhile back but then read that it's an EV. One of the parents of these is a dormant and since I live in zone 5 I need to match it up with another dormant or at least an SEV. I can grow Evergreen's here but it's a hit or miss. David Kirchhoff told me to use only what does well in my zone when planning my crosses so I'm going to try and keep that piece of wisdom at the top of my memory bank!

Tink...if these multiply quickly I'll definitely keep you in mind if I wish to sell some of either of them. I want to see how they do through the winter and how they perform next year when they hopefully get some rain! I only watered a few times during our drought, so I know they're both pretty tough (so far!)

In addition to my seedling crosses I've got All Things To All Men on hold for me from Karol Emmerich....my most $$ hybridizing plant to date. Excited to see what babies that will bring me in future years. Won her Gnashing of Teeth on the LA so looking forward to using that one too.

I hope more people will post here what crosses they plan to make, I enjoy the reading and looking them up to see their characteristics Smiling

Sandy, I love your toothy seedlings! I'm interested in the toothy ones too. What about using TITANIC in crosses? It's a SEV, and I think there are still a couple up for auction on the Lily Auction.

spunky1 said:It took me a long time before I thought I had two of anything of my own I could cross and expect decent seedlings. I would use a lot of the latest and greatest and hardly ever got exactly what I was looking far. Use your own seedlings because they are the latest and greatest, the new ones you buy have been at the hybridizers garden for 5+ years before we ever see it. Just incorporate a few of the better ones into your seedlings, but do your major hybridizing seedling x seedling and you will be much happier with the results.

Reread what Fred said here, couldn't agree more or say this any better.
Beautiful seedlings shown in this thread! These are a few of the many crosses I plan to do next year.

Thank you Betty. The red eyed one does show the beginings of color variation in the red so with fingers crossed the red and white will come through with the eye breaks of the other sdlg and the horrible tan/beige will be left behind Smiling The orange one has incredable relief and was used this year on a variety of sdlgs and reg plants. The long winters up here allow for some clear and obvious thinking for crosses to make that I may not have thought of during the past season.

The red pattern is really something to work with, most patterns are the same old colors, but yours is something I haven't seen. All the seedlings are great, good luck.

Juli, have to admit I have a soft spot for sculpts too. Smiling

Thank you Shirlee and Fred. The red eye sdlg was saved 4 years ago. Sadly... or stupidly, I've never done anything with it. *Blush* It has a decent plant under it too, I've just never been able to find the right one to cross it with until I noticed that this 2011 broken eye kid has some red in the eye.

I have one lone seedling from BAJA CALIFORNIA X CAN'T TOUCH THIS. I want so badly to see it bloom next summer that I take it out every morning to bask in the sunshine then I bring it back inside if the temps are supposed to be below freezing at night. This may get old, but I can't bear to leave it outside since it is in a Sonic cup (tall) so that the roots can grow long.

Hope all your doing for that one seedling is worth it Ann, if I did that it would certainly be nothing when it bloomed. Your plants are really doing great here, they will all be clumps my May when we have our Regional Meeting.

Char I have overlooked plants that I should have been using before, then one day something clicks and I want to kick myself for neglecting it a couple of years.
