I am still involved with the old DG and jump between the two on a regular basis (I work from home on my computer and often have 'down time' while being on hold or some other time waster). On DG I noted a post from another person with a pretty generic note that DG had lost many members to ATP. I responded that many of the missing folks from DG are actually not over here, but have simply dropped out of cybersight. The next thing I knew, the entire post was deleted, I assume by administration. That really smacks of censorship to me - neither post was particularly offensive and if DG cannot even tolerate the mention of a rival site, they are being very short-sighted in my mind. Very curious.

On a totally unrelated note, would it make sense to anyone else to rename this forum to simply PNW Gardening? I always have to look twice to choose between Pacific Northwest and Pacific Coast. Could just be my old eyes.

Deb, I'm having the same problem with "pacific" so good idea! BTW I think Dave is the same person from ATP and "dave's" garden, so I don't think there's any competition (but that just may be my total error)???? Now I'm totally curious!
I think for Dave (from here) to see your idea you have to post it in the "ideas" forum (and I think you should, I like PNW)
Hurray!

It is censorship, and Terry's habit of deleting posts and whole threads was the reason I left DG way back in 2008 or 2009. Other people have since renewed my subscription regularly (usually Pirl because she likes to send me links to ridiculous posts), and I do go there periodically to check things out, but I'll never be active there again.

I think that person was right: DG has lost many members to ATP. I see them here and in Cubits. DG has been losing members steadily ever since Dave left. I've watched the stats in the weekly newsletter. There were 9,000 subscribers when Dave was there, but the figure's down to about 4,500 now.

As for the other thing, I also confuse Pacific Northwest with Pacific Coast, but I like both forums, so it's not a problem for me. I think PNW is an abbreviation that might be quite common to you "PNW-ers," but most people wouldn't know what it is.

I keep the PNW forum in my Favorite Forums list, but not the "California Forum".

Warm weather? What's that? I'm Sunset Zone 5. Koppen Zone Csb (but lately summers have been much warmer than "b" suggests.

BTW, in Site Talk, we got onto the topic of climate regions and regional variations. I found a site "PlantMaps" that has interactive, infinitely zoomable maps. I love the feature that lets you turn on or off the coloring for different USDA Hardiness zones so that you can tell which one is yours even if the colors look very similar. I really like it!

"PlantMaps" has a whole TABLE of different maps, like Frost Dates, hardiness zones, heat zones, "EPA Ecoregions", and native trees and plants. You can scan around the state maps like WA or OR, or enter your ZIP code, and zoom down to your neighborhood if you're near a border.

These posts and links discuss global "Koppen" climate zones:

Also, here is a site that lets you search or download a big text file listing the "Koppen Climate Zones" for every US County. When I look at that and see three very different zones just in Snohomish County, I realize that climate, not just weather, is very local!

Like Zuzu, I enjoy both (mostly to drool over things blooming in warmer climes) and have them both in my favorites, often one below the other. It's not a problem, whichever one I open first gets read and then I move to the next. Just a thought for clarity - some folks may be confused what the difference is, perfectly clear to us living here, perhaps not so much to someone from the east coast.

When Pacific Coast Gardening started out, it was supposed to be for people in Mexico, California, Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Alaska, and Hawaii, but no one was ever active except the Californians, so it started to be misperceived as a California forum, and Pacific Northwest Gardening was created on that basis.

Rick thanks for this info - its interesting for sure!!
Deb, I usually stop myself before going to the "california" forum! Sticking tongue out Kidding, guess leaving it like it is now is fine, I just thought it was funny because I have done that, gone into the forum and been confused, where is BH, Rick and Spring? Hilarious!
Zazu, I am so curious what some of the "dirt" is on this Dave's garden story Hilarious!
cheers

There is so much dirt, Gregg, and all of it came from that side. Dave always acted ethically, but the other side kept making false accusations until the court stepped in and made them issue a public apology.

Suffice it to say that Dave and Trish were the heart and soul of DG and with them gone? Don't know... but we're lucky that he created ATP for us. I feel good about belonging to a site that is owned by honest, ethical, caring, involved people as opposed to.......

That's just sad! People get power hungry I think (even on a site that's intended to be fun and informative!) I hope he set this site up totally different so no possibility for a repeat! (and cheers to him that he's so committed to doing this that he set ATP up!, I could imagine many people just giving up and doing something completely different!)
Thanks Zuzu for update/info (one final thing - all the threads that I've read where he's responding, he just seems so nice and polite, so I'm really sorry that "junk" happened to him, I don't think he deserves it!) Ok, rant finished!! Big Grin
