I agree, that is a great idea! The best part is it isn't ugly but still offers protection from the rain.

This was a partridge breast aloe that had a bad case of scale. It overwintered in an old compost pile where it took root and this weekend I found these blooms.

Its' offspring is nestled in a comfortable greenhouse and has shown no desire to bloom so I wonder what the trigger was. Thumb of 2013-03-20/pod/f77eb2

Compost pile, must be the temperature and humidity. Organic things on decomposition release heat plus methane. I know methane/carbon dioxide is used to hasten the process of ripening in fruit but in this case Shrug! .
Plexiglass and fiberglass but I have no idea what the difference in cost will be. Farmer here use plastic film for tunnel farming, lasts one season.

Arif.

Arif, you might be right on the compost site triggering the bloom cycle. I did wonder if the neglect/abuse made the plant react with a survival instinct to reproduce. It had three buds but only two blooms.

Plexi will last a long time although dust can scratch and blur the finish over a long time. I did wonder if it could magnify the suns' rays and blister the plants though if they were in direct sunlight.

In this climate, a plastic film will dry, break up and shed like a snake skin in one season too. I did finally purchase a 6 mil UV rated plastic film that lasts longer.

Greg ~ it is pretty to see green at this time of year but that isn't clover. It is Oxalis with tiny pink blooms that endear it but it is difficult to erradicate. It is a bulb that spreads voraciously and the blooms reseed too. I think it arrived in potting soil or a plant someone gave me. And IT is here to stay... grrrr!

Yes, I knew it was oxalis, just couldn't think of the name Sticking tongue out I know it is hard to get rid of it, and I like it anyway, although I only keep it in one pot and look out for it spreading! (You're right it can grow from the bulblets and seeds! I tip my hat to you.

I know that in summers fiberglass is bad. It somehow concentrates the heat under it and also desiccates the atmosphere Thumbs down but in winter something like that can be used to advantage. Mind, I am talking just of a roof with sides open, with sides closed it can become a hothouse unless you have forced ventilation.

Arif.

Yes in Seattle and beyond glass greenhouses are a in thing but in a place which is hot and dry for 80% of the year, a glass greenhouse can become a nightmare.
Kew Garden has a massive greenhouse and when I visited it, most of the time I spent going over their ventilation, humidifying and air-conditioning system other then appreciating their gardening skills.

Arif.

I tip my hat to you. Reed House. Water reeds they absorb the heat plus reduce the light intensity better then greenhouse netting. This is in summer and our average temp in summer is 45c. While in winter it is minus 5c.

tarev said:This winter my ever resilient Sedum dendroideum is pouting really bad. Keeping fingers crossed that it is just a phase that it wants to drop the older leaves to give way to newer ones, otherwise, I will feel so sad!!

Just a photo update of my very threadbare sedum dendroideum. Now that warmer weather has returned, I see active new growth along the threadbare stalks..so maybe I will observe a little more and see if it fills in nicely. Last week, I have been misting the stalks, and it is responding nicely, now with our downpour yesterday, it will surely appreciate the return of warm dry weather.

So it seems some stepped misting or watering is okay for this one, once new growth is visible and the weather is warm, to make it grow back faster. Smiling But if weather is still quite cold, it will drop the leaves quickly moreso when it gets wet.

They do have similar stem structure..but this one drops its leaves fast when it feels cold and wet.
