The seedlings are almost all bloomed out Crying But there are still a few that refuse to give up.

This one got started rather late. It's just now blooming. It's a cross of 'Violet Shadows' x 'Cobraskin Necktie'

Making progress in this last weeks of the blooming season is a difficult thing - there are still many flowers open but they are:
pale pink, pale apricot or pale yellow - color is missing even if bud count and flower form are quite good - some typical examples:

Less than 50 seedlings did not start to flower now - half of them are brandnew - maybe some of them will be able to add further color, pattern and distinction. Crossing Fingers!

Thank you so much, Debra! Lovey dubby "The Queen' is definitely one I am proud of. She set multiple pods last year as a one-year old seedling and again this year, has excellent branching & bud count, great substance, large 7 - 8 inch blooms with intense deep color and that lovely white edge. What's not to love?

plasko20....congratulations! Looks like a nice size and good color Smiling I'm always happy to see what came of my seeds. Hurray!

More is yet to come. One individual seedling from another cross I got from you (and I have been experimenting with) now has 6 scapes! (photo) I saw 4 scapes last weekend, but 2 new ones have just popped out of the foliage. As of right now it has the garden name "The Great E-Scape". Big Grin
Thumb of 2021-08-20/plasko20/933bca
And it is also less than a year old. Buds are still small, however. Probably will not bloom until September.

I LOVE the name! Smiling I don't know what it is about my seeds but blooming in their first year seems to be the 'norm'. I expected it to take 2 -3 years in New England. I will be super excited to see what cross this is and what the blooms look like. But WOW.....6 scapes in such a young seedling! Thumbs up

Ahhh. Um...So, the 6-scape one is an experiment. I treated it with a hormone (descibed in a different thread, I wont repeat here). The other 4 seedlings of the same cross (untreated) have zero scapes between them. Similarly, the PRXRIU201 seedling I showed was also treated with hormone (the other 2 untreated have zero scapes). The great number of scapes is probably not natural but due to the experiment (and what I was testing for - faster flowering).

Last year I collected some "corporate daylily" seeds (from businesses close to where I work - I threw all seeds together in a pile). From these I grew 7 "corporate daylilies". The first one to flower was today. It is yellow so probably a Stella seedling (but much more canary yellow).
I should name it for Sue as it is truly a nightlily. Started to open about 6pm (no photo as neighbors were having a domestic on their balcony), but I got 7pm, 8pm, 9pm pics.
Small flower, so, 'meh'. But I did not know daylilies could do a nightshift.

I am busy canning right now and haven't had time to catch up yet, but I was out pulling weeds and planting a few prolifs
this morning and saw this seedling reblooming. They have really made gigantic strides with teeth in the last few years,
and mine won't win any prizes, but I liked the size of this one....

Some species open in the evening, flower all night and are done at least at noon the next day (e. g. H.citrina , H. altissimas and H. lilioasphodelus syn. flava) - therefore it's difficult to take pictures of H. citrina later in the morning.

I've heard of cultivars that inherited this trait - maybe some of my seedlings can do this too but they are in the seedlings garden five minutes walk from our garden and I have never been there in the evening. Thinking

Today there was no time to take pictures - hours were used for culling 3 seedling beds (still 2 left) - maybe tomorrow I will be finished). The weather forecast says rainy and cold next week so I do my best to finish this work as soon as possible.

You are right, Sue.
It is probably more common than people notice because they are not there to see evening flowering.
I luckily have this one on my balcony, right next to the kitchen. So I see it often, several times a day, and it was lucky to flower at the weekend when I spend more time out there.
And I have very few daylilies so they all get extra attention, anyway. I doubt I would notice much if I had hundreds and hundreds to deal with.

PS - Thankfully, this flower is still going strong. It is now almost 2.45pm.

If you have fewer plants you can better find out their specific characteristics - that's the reason why I am now culling seedlings like crazy. Night flowering is perfect for all that are out on the job the whole day (for years saw perfect flowers only on the weekends - early in the morning when I had to leave they were not fully open, late in the afternoon they were melted in the heat).

From todays FFO's only one seedling seems to have some potential - many buds at this time of the year, about 5" flowers and not yellow:
Fall Pink Melon VT (Olallie, not registered) x (RR Red VT (Olallie, not registered) x Suzy Cream Cheese)
