I agree , @GigiPlumeria , you may consider to clean all the hairy roots, attach a styrofoam or plastic lid to push the roots outward a bid, like what we did at the 2nd root selection of adenium root training..

Yes! My desert rose cuttings both have buds but I noticed ants and suspect it has root mealies Grumbling so I had to uproot Grumbling Hopefully the buds will not abort!
One can be root trained and the other is developing a caudex! Hurray!

If I recall correctly these might be the survivors of last fall's propagation by cuttings.

It was put in this wick pot about a week after that, about 3 weeks ago. I think it's going to live or it would have shriveled up by now.

I agree that looks like it is rooted by now. The interesting part is that my rooted cuttings once established develop buds almost the same time as the momma plant.

I grow plumerias from cuttings so I am okay with desert roses propagated from cuttings. My friends who are receiving these rooted cuttings don't mind that they are grown from cuttings.

How fun! I'm sure people are very happy to receive those.

That was my first one to succeed. 3 previous attempts stuck directly in pots did not work. It was really hot @ the time so the timing could have been the biggest hurdle, I have no idea. I wasn't propagating for the sake of propagating, but because I was trimming a plant anyway. I couldn't not try it since I had the pieces in hand.

I was actually propagating them so I can share my blooms. My friends And neighbors are not in NGA and so they don't know Anything about caudex. I still explain it to them and the answer I get is that they just like the flowers.

But the flowers are made that much more special because of the fat caudex and the way the caudex then shows off the flowers! I doubt I'd like them near as much without the caudex.

That's what most of us like because of the "bonsai" look. However my friends have only seen mostly the photos of the flowers I sent them. So to them it is the flowers they like. Big Grin

In 2 years or more, the cuttings will have fat roots too that resembles a caudex for the "untrained" eyes. I think root pruning and pruning the cuttings in spring will expedite the "swollen roots". I will know more next year if I have enough cuttings to experiment on.

@purpleinopp Tiffany you might have cracked an easier way to root the cuttings. I water rooted these 4 cuttings after letting it callous for a week. That is 100% success!

I repotted the mother plant in a bigger pot so I will let to join the mother plant and repot separately in spring!

I do see roots! Congrats! But they look so different than mine did. Yours didn't make root primordia all over the submerged part of the stem. Did your cuttings wilt while they were drying for a week? I saw that and lost my nerve and that's how I ended up doing the water.

But I only had 50% success. One rooted, 1 rotted, but in defense of the one that rotted, it was a branch that I had cut off because there was a weird soft spot on that stem. I thought I had cut away all of the weird part, but might have not gone far enough.

I can't wait to try more cuttings in the spring. I want to keep all of the branches short, so I will want to cut them anyway, with propagating the stems being bonus fun for doing it.

No, they didn't shrivel because the bottom part of the stems are about a dime size in diameter and they were at least last year's growth. They only shrivel for me if I cut the young stems.

Another Double Moon cutting bloomed. I'm impressed that Desert roses cutting will bloom same year of planting.

Another 'Double Moon' rooted cutting. Strangely enough the blooming time is in sync with the momma plant.

I just repotted from sharing with other cuttings. The ones that bloom first gets a special pot. Hilarious!

Right Cutting of 'Double Moon', I had this drying for a week. I am surprised that the buds still bloomed but significantly smaller (less than 2 inches). It looks almost like a different variety:
